John Rhoades is a native of Greenfield and a member of the Marine Corps League 1263 Wortman Lowe Enduring Freedom detachment. Last year he was participating in the parade at Morristown Derby Days. Afterward he passed the Lions Club tent and decided to join, thinking of the causes the group supports. He later found out the club has an old Soapbox derby car. He said being a small man, he was asked to participate in this year’s adult race, set for 5:30 p.m. Friday. He is very excited about the opportunity, is looking forward to supporting the Lions Club and reminds everyone that the club is the original group that has sponsored and administrated the Derby Days in Morristown for more than 60 years.

Monday: People sometimes ask me if I can finish a column in one sitting (like I do with Denny’s Grand Slam breakfast) or if I dabble with it, like my wife’s spinach soufflé. I’ve used both methods, but the pressure of completing a story in one day has taken its toll. I’m not as young or as creative as I used to be. My column can be no more than 600 words each week, so if I take Sundays off and divide by six days, I’d have to write exactly 100 words a day. Which means that I’m done today.

GREENFIELD — The Rotary Club of Greenfield’s Steak ‘n Bake ‘n Raffle is back this year at the Hancock County Fairgrounds on Sept. 17. Once again, it will have People’s Choice. Hancock County 501(c)3 organizations are encouraged to send a one-page summary of their mission statement, vision, impact and number of people served annually along with their 501(c)3 letter and most recent years’ financials to [email protected] no later than July 30 for consideration. Each nonprofit will be invited to give their elevator speech at the club meeting at noon Thursday, Aug. 4. Rotarians will vote for the top 10 (if less than 15 apply, all will be accepted). The top 10 nonprofits may then garner new dollars for the fundraiser beginning Sept. 1 culminating the night of the event. The top five organizations that bring in the most dollars will get to split the profits raised at the raffle. The remaining five will retain the dollars they raised.
