HANCOCK COUNTY — New Palestine and Greenfield-Central will be represented today at the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling (IHSGW) State Finals at Mooresville High School.

New Palestine’s Sydney DeLois (120-pound class), Madisyn Covington (145) and Julia Champ (160) and Greenfield-Central’s Kylie Smith-Foster (113) and Ella Harpold (170) are among the competitors seeking championships and state medals.

For the Dragons, DeLois is a third-time qualifier. It is the first time for both Covington and Champ.

For the Cougars, Smith-Foster is also in the event for the third time. It is Harpold’s second trip to the finals.

To qualify, wrestlers had to finish in the top four in their weight class in last week’s Warren Central Regional.

DeLois won her tournament. The other four county grapplers were runners-up.

Last year, at the state meet, DeLois placed fourth. Harpold was fifth at 182.

In 2021, Smith-Foster finished second in the 98-pound class. DeLois was fourth at 113.

“I’m really hopeful we’ll have three girls qualify (to the quarterfinals),” New Palestine head coach Jason DeLois said. “We’ve got to get through that first round. If you get through that first round you place.

“I think Sydney could very well win … With her and everyone else, you’re in state. Everyone is good.”

DeLois is the highest ranked wrestler, according to IndianaMat.com. She is No. 2 in her class. Harpold is No. 3. Both Smith-Foster and Champ are No. 7, as of the Jan. 5 rankings. Covington is unranked.

Wrestling begins at 11 a.m. with the round of 16. Quarterfinals are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. Semifinals and consolation rounds are expected to get underway at 3 p.m.

Placement matches are at 4:30 p.m. with the finals slated to get underway at 6:30 p.m.
