Cougars boys XC

takes seventh

The Greenfield-Central boys cross-country team placed seventh out of 22 teams during the Rick Weinheimer Classic on Saturday.

The Cougars tied for sixth place with Whiteland, but lost on the tiebreaker.

Multiple Cougars ran either a season-best time or a personal-best time.

Junior Matt Wickham broke 17 minutes for the first time running 16:37 for 35th place. Wickham’s time puts him as the 17th-fastest in Cougars’ history.

Austin Nigh also dropped under 17 minutes by running in 16:55 (45th). Freshmen Liam Brinkruff almost joined Wickham and Nigh by running a PR of 17:02 (49th).

Brinkruff is now the third-fastest freshman in Cougars history.

Griffen Wheeler ran a PR in 17:13 (56th). Freshmen Chris Ross ran a PR of 17:17 (61st), and his time was good enough for the seventh-fastest freshmen in Cougars history.

Luke Muckerheide took almost a minute off his time this season running 17:52 (90th). Morgan Flanagan ran a PR at 17:56 (93rd). Jacob Presser ran a season-best time of 18:12 (101st), and Lucas Tutrow ran 19:20 (135th).

Marauders finish

13th at Marion

The Mt. Vernon girls cross-country team knew that they had an uphill battle going into the Marion Invitational on Saturday.

Racing in the Chuck Schlemmer elite division, Mt. Vernon placed 13th. Second-ranked Carmel outpaced No. 1 Ft. Wayne Carroll by a mere point to win the event, but they were followed closely behind by a bevy of top-20 ranked talent.

However, the Marauders did not back down. Navigating the middle pack, MV’s first six runners all set significant personal bests and the team was a mere 13 points away from Bishop Dwenger in the final standings.
