Tennis roundup: Marauders remain unbeaten with win over Yorktown

With a 5-0 victory at Yorktown Thursday, Mt. Vernon’s girls tennis team, ranked No. 13 in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association poll, improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

Singles players Caroline Allen (No. 1), Ginni Morelli (No. 2) and Maria Downs (No. 3) combined to win all but one game. Allen and Morelli both won 6-0, 6-0. Downs won 6-0, 6-1.

The results were similar in doubles play. The No. 1 team of Kylie Brandes and Ava Lusby won 6-0, 6-1. Addison Lockwood and Sophie Maxwell won 6-1, 6-0.

The Marauders travel to Franklin Central Monday.

Dragons fall to Delta

New Palestine, in a Hoosier Heritage Conference girls tennis match at home Thursday, lost 5-0 to Delta.

The Dragons dropped to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the HHC.

At No. 1 singles, Kaitlyn Mitchell lost 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2, Bethany Blachly was defeated 6-0, 6-1 and No. 3 Maizy Haynes lost 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Josephine Harvey and Emily Appleby lost 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 group of Amelia Schneider and Riley Watts lost 6-2, 6-3.

The Dragons travel to Waldron Monday.

Greenfield-Central 3rd at Plainfield Invite

Greenfield-Central’s girls tennis team went 1-2 and finished in third place at the Plainfield Invitational Saturday.

The Cougars bounced back from an opening round 5-0 loss to Plainfield by defeating Terre Haute North 3-2.

G-C lost to Pike, 4-1, in its final match.

On Thursday, in a Hoosier Heritage Conference match at home against New Castle, the Cougars lost 4-1

G-C returns to action Monday with a home match against Blue River Valley.
