Melvin “Mel” Charles Brewer, 79, passed away Friday, March 1, 2024 at Hancock Regional Hospital. He was born February 13, 1945 in Clarksville, Indiana to the late Melvin C. Brewer and Jacqueline (Bir) Dale formerly of New Albany.

He graduated from North High School, Evansville, Ind. in 1963 where he served as Jr. Class President and Student Council President. He was a 3 year starter for the varsity basketball team. In 1967 he graduated from Indiana University School of Business earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in marketing. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity where he served as Treasurer and Social Chairman. Mel remained a die-hard I.U. fan his entire life and was never to be interrupted during an I.U. basketball game.

He married his high school sweetheart, Ann Harper, in January 1967 and recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. He was a board member for the Hancock County Boys and Girls Club for 15 years and was an usher for Bradley United Methodist Church for many years.

Mel worked for Aetna Life and Casualty, E.F. Hutton and formed his own brokerage firm, Cornerstone Insurance along with a manufacturing firm, Sealwrap Systems.

He was known for his sense of humor, his kindness, love of family, and putting others first.

He is survived by his wife, Ann (Harper) Brewer, son, Greg (Megan) Brewer, daughters, Lesley (Ben) Markley, Amanda McGee, brother, Bobby (Sheila) Dale, sister, Vicki Blemker, grandchildren, Austin Markley, Ella Markley, Avery Markley, Zac Brewer, Jacqueline Brewer, Preston Wise, Carter Wise, Kian McGee, Ivy McGee, Hank McGee and Hazel McGee.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, loving step-father, Joseph Dale and sister, Patti Moore.

Visitation will be 2 until 4:00 p.m., Thursday, March 7, 2024 at Bradley United Methodist Church, 210 W. Main Street, Greenfield, IN 46140. Memorial Service will follow at 400 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at a later date at Park Cemetery, Greenfield. A reception for family and friends will be held at the Brewer home following the service, everyone is welcome.
