County track and field standouts compete in national events

Some of Hancock County’s top track and field athletes competed last weekend in a pair of national events held in Eugene, Oregon and Philadelphia.

Greenfield-Central participated in nine events at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in the NIKE Outdoor Nationals.

Mt. Vernon took runners to Philadelphia’s Franklin Field to compete in New Balance Nationals Outdoor 2023.

Competing in the 4×400-meter relay championship, Greenfield’s Aaron Lee, Ian Jack, Michael Runions and Griffen Wheeler placed fourth with a time of 3:24.82.

Wheeler added an 18th, out of 70, in the 1600-meter emerging elite category, finishing his race in 4:21.66. In the 800 championship category, Wheeler, who will compete at the University of Southern Indiana next school year, was 40th of 63 with a time of 1:55.

Lee was 57th of 81 in the emerging elite category of the 100 dash. He ran an 11.36 seconds race. Jack was disqualified in the 200 for a lane violation.

State runner-up high jumper Elliot Ryba, competing in the championship category, placed 15th of 36 with a clearance of 6-feet, 5-inches.

In the emerging elite category of the 110 high hurdles and 400 hurdles, Cash Looper finishes 22nd of 46 in the highs (15.70 seconds) and 50th of 50 in the 400 (1:04.23).

Rising-freshman Josie Kinnaman ran in the girls’ middle school mile and placed 46th out of 70 with a time of 5:35.51. Her coach, Chris Tatom placed 22nd of 34 (5:54.31) in the coach’s mile.

In Philadelphia, Mt. Vernon’s Tristan Trevino was 27th of 81 in the 800 run with a time of 1:52.12. The group of Trevino, Andres Langston, Tre Jones and Caden Cassada finished 23rd of 63 in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:21.19.

Langston was entered in the 400 dash, but did not race in the event.
