Greenfield’s Drey Jameson has returned to the big leagues as a reliever for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Staff report

After starting the year on the Arizona Diamondbacks opening day roster, and being sent to the minor leagues in April, Greenfield’s Drey Jameson has returned to the big leagues.

Jameson, who made his major league debut in September of last season, was sent down to Triple-A Reno after an April 23 start against the San Diego Padres.

He had worked both out of the bullpen and as a starter in six outings to start the 2023 season in Arizona. At Reno, strictly as a starter, Jameson went 4-0 in five starts with a 5.79 earned run average.

He returned to the Diamondbacks to pitch out of the bullpen on May 29 against the Colorado Rockies. He threw 3 2/3 innings of relief and had six strikeouts while giving up five hits and one walk.

He has thrown four times in June, all out of the bullpen, picking up the victory in a 9-8 Diamondbacks win over the Philadelphia Phillies on June 12. He has pitched at least two innings in each of his five appearances since returning to the big club.

In all, Jameson is 3-1 on the year in 11 appearances, including three starts, with a 3.82 ERA. He’s thrown 30 2/3 innings, giving up 30 hits, 16 walks and has struck out 28.

The 25-year old right-hander is a 2017 Greenfield-Central graduate.

Though his 2023 season has been back and forth from Arizona to Reno and from the bullpen to starting rotation back to the bullpen, Jameson’s numbers in 15 major league appearances have been productive. He is 6-1 with a 2.78 earned run average with a save and a hold.

He was a first-round pick and 34th player taken overall in the 2019 Major League Baseball draft. After leaving Greenfield-Central, Jameson pitched two seasons at Ball State University. He was the MAC Pitcher of the Year in 2019.

After Jameson was recalled last month, ArizonaSports.com reported the former Cougar star would return to the bullpen for the time begin, according to Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo.

The Diamondbacks have been one of the surprise teams in baseball this season. They currently lead the National League West Division by two games over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Diamondbacks, at 41-28, have the second best record in the NL, trailing only the Atlanta Braves (43-26).
