Mt. Vernon’s baseball team picked up its 12th straight win Thursday, defeating the Indianapolis Kings, a home-schooled team, 9-6 at Mt. Vernon High School.

Trailing 5-4, the Marauders scored five times in the fifth inning.

Russell Weaver, Drew Bucksot and Nathan Criss each had two RBIs. Joseph Wilson hit a triple and had an RBI.

Weaver had three of Mt. Vernon’s six hits. Criss was the winning pitcher.

The Marauders are 18-2 overall and play at Bloomington North Saturday.

Big inning wins it for NP

Tied 2-2 after seven innings, New Palestine decided things quickly in Thursday’s varsity baseball game at Cathedral.

The Dragons scored nine runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Irish 11-2.

It was a rematch of last year’s regional championship game won by Cathedral.

Michael Thorpe threw all eight innings for the Dragons. He scattered five hits and gave up just one earned run.

Blaine Nunnally had a two-run home run in the eighth.

Nunnally, Wes Stiller and Jacob Morris each had two hits.

New Palestine (16-7) hosts Scecina Monday.

Eastern defeats Indy Genesis

Eastern Hancock’s baseball team defeated Indy Genesis HomeSchool 6-2 at Eastern Hancock Thursday.

Caleb Johnson and Hayden Rouse each had a double and an RBI. Rouse had two of the Royals four hits.

Conner Wittgren and Colton Dishman added RBIs.

Rouse added the win on the mound. He went six innings, gave up two hits, two earned runs and struck out five. He walked four. Dishman struck out two and gave up one hit in an inning of relief.

Eastern Hancock (8-13) plays host to Northeastern Monday.

Softball

Royals score 20

Eastern Hancock’s softball team defeated host Anderson 20-0 Thursday.

The game went just three innings. The Royals scored 10 times in the third after a four-run first and six-run second.

Eastern Hancock (15-4) plays at Franklin County today.

G-C wins at LC

Greenfield-Central improved to 14-6 on the season with a 16-5 victory at Lawrence Central Thursday.

The Cougars scored multiple runs in five of seven innings. They hit five doubles, getting one each from Olivia Roberts, Katie Muegge, Madysen Herbert, Faith Butler and Camille Burelison.

Burelison had a team-best three RBIs. Butler, Herbert, Roberts and Addi Herrin each drove in two.

Greenfield-Central is hosting a tournament Saturday. The Cougars play Seymour at 9 a.m., Frankton at 10:30 a.m., and Warren Central at 1:30 p.m.

Boys golf

Eastern loses close one on Senior Day

Eastern Hancock’s boys golf team lost 173-174 to Wapahani at Royal Hylands in Knightstown Thursday.

Three Eastern Hancock golfers had season-low rounds. Corey Leece finished with a 40. Ronnie Johnson, the lone senior, had a 42 and Christian Whisman carded a 45.

To round out scoring, Parker Atkins had a 47 and Jacob Jackson finished with a 48.

The team will play in the Mid-Eastern Conference tournament Saturday at Crestview Golf Course.

Girls tennis

Mt. Vernon falls to HSE

The Mt. Vernon girls tennis team lost 3-2 to Hamilton Southeastern Thursday at the Mt. Vernon High School tennis courts.

Maria Downs won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Sophie Maxwell and Addy Lockwood won at No. 2 doubles, 2-6, 7-5, and 10-7 in a third-set super tie-breaker.

At No. 1, Regan Ralstin lost 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 Ava Lusby was defeated 6-0, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, Carmen Lugo and Kim Joubert lost 6-1, 6-1.

The Marauders are 8-5 overall.
