Dragons get road win at Fishers

Sydney Oliver had three of the team’s 10 hits and two RBIs in New Palestine’s 3-0 non-conference softball victory at Fishers Wednesday.

All 10 New Palestine hits were singles. Maddie Engle and Aglaia Rudd had two each.

Sadey Hughbanks and Courtney Study combined for the shutout. Hughbanks gave up eight hits and struck out two in six innings of work. Study had a strikeout and walk in one inning.

New Palestine (15-4, 4-1) travels to Pendleton Heights (16-4, 3-1) in a key Hoosier Heritage Conference matchup today. Pendleton Heights is ranked No. 6 and New Palestine is No. 7 in the Softball Coaches Association of Indiana Class 4A poll.

Marauders beat Raiders, Wildcats

Mt. Vernon scored eight runs in the first two innings to take command in Tuesday’s 11-5 win over Shenandoah at Mt. Vernon High School.

Shelby Rakosky had three solo home runs for the Marauders. Drew Fithian also had a three-hit game.

Graci Hines had two hits, including a home run.

Fithian, Emma Jenkins and Lexi Beeler each had doubles. Ainsley Baer had two RBIs.

On Wednesday, Mt. Vernon (11-9) won 6-4 at Lawrence North.

The Marauders travel to Anderson Monday.

Girls tennis

Mt. Vernon downs New Castle

The Mt. Vernon girls tennis team picked up a 5-0 win, at home, Wednesday over Hoosier Heritage Conference opponent New Castle.

Kylie Brandes (No. 1), Ava Lusby (No. 2) and Maria Downs (No. 3) won singles matches. The team of Kim Joubert/Carmen Lugo (No. 1) and Sophie Maxwell/Regan Ralstin (No. 2) won in doubles play.

The Marauders finish the conference season in second place with a 6-1 record. They are 8-4 overall.

G-C sweeps PH

Greenfield-Central’s girls tennis team earned a 5-0 sweep, at home, over Pendleton Heights Tuesday.

All five wins were in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Brianna McConnell won 6-2, 6-1. No. 2 Kammi Anderson won 6-0, 6-0 and No. 3 Madison Succaw won 6-0, 6-2.

At No. 1 doubles, Jaclyn Layton and Emma Berty won 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2, Lauren Chastain and Hallie Smith won 6-0, 6-0.

Greenfield-Central plays in the Lapel Tournament Saturday.

Dragons lose at Greensburg

The New Palestine girls tennis team dropped to 11-7 on the season with a 5-0 loss at Greensburg Tuesday.

In singles action, No. 1 Olivia Hasenkamp lost 6-1, 6-4. No. 2 Kaitlyn Mitchell was defeated 6-3, 6-2 and No. 3 Mia Knoop lost 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles matches, Bethany Blachly and Jo Harvey were defeated 6-1, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Emily Appleby and Maddy Potter lost 6-3, 6-4.

The Dragons have a home match scheduled today against Whiteland.

EH drops match

Eastern Hancock’s girls team lost a close home match, 3-2, to Waldron on Tuesday.

Boys volleyball

New Pal finishes regular season with win

The New Palestine boys volleyball team wrapped up the regular-season portion of the 2023 season with a 3-1 win over visiting Warren Central Tuesday.

The Dragons (11-15) won by set scores of 25-12, 21-25, 25-17, 25-9.

They will play in the Roncalli Sectional Saturday against Beech Grove.

Baseball

Dragons win series opener

In the opening game of its Hoosier Heritage Conference two-game baseball series with Pendleton Heights, New Palestine defeated the host Arabians Tuesday, 8-1.

The Dragons took a 14-7 overall mark and 7-4 HHC record into Wednesday’s home game with the Arabians.

On Tuesday, Blaine Nunnally earned the complete game victory. He struck out 11 and gave up just four hits.

Wes Stiller went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Eastern splits games

The Eastern Hancock baseball team beat Seton Catholic 10-0 Monday and lost to Indianapolis Kings 12-2 on Tuesday, in a pair of home games earlier this week.

On Monday, Chase Stewart pitched a six-inning complete game. He struck out 11 and gave up just one hit.

He led the offense, too, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Carson Borden and Jalen Helderbrand each had two RBIs. Helderbrand had a double.

The Royals had seven hits in Tuesday’s loss. Borden and Colton Dishman each had two. Dishman and Caleb Retherford had RBIs. Retherford had a double.

Eastern Hancock (7-13) is playing host to Indy Genesis HomeSchool today at 5:30 p.m.

Boys golf

Alley, Young lead G-C

Josh Alley and Tyler Young each shot 38s to lead the Greenfield-Central boys golf team to victory over Shelbyville and New Castle.

The Cougars shot 162. Shelbyville finished with a 168. New Castle carded a 193.

The 162 is a season-low for nine-hole matches.

Greenfield-Central will compete Saturday at the Hoosier Heritage Conference Tournament at Players Club in Yorktown.

New Pal in middle

In a three-team match with Shenandoah and Eastern Hancock, the New Palestine boys golf team finished in second place Tuesday at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield Golf Course.

Shenandoah won with a 177, six strokes better than the Dragons’ 183. Eastern Hancock shot 204.

Alex Cofer was low for New Pal with a 41.

The Dragons were scheduled to play Mt. Vernon at Hawk’s Tail on Wednesday.
