Bolding’s blasts lead Eastern Hancock over Union County

Emma Bolding hit three home runs and drove in six to lead No. 4 Eastern Hancock to a 10-8 victory over No. 11 Union County, in Charlottesville, Thursday.

In a battle between two of the state’s top Class 2A softball programs, the Royals tied the back-and-forth game, 8-8, with a three-run fourth inning.

They added two in the sixth to take the lead and held the Patriots scoreless in the seventh.

Brooklyn Willis had two hits, including a home run and two RBIs.

Union County dropped to 13-4 on the season. Eastern Hancock is 12-3.

On Wednesday the Royals lost 13-3 to Pendleton Heights, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A.

Sammie Bolding had a home run and an RBI. Lilli Ringer had three hits and two RBIs. Willis had a double and a run scored.

Eastern is scheduled to host Lapel today.

Marauders lose pair of HHC matchups

Mt. Vernon fell to 8-9 overall and 2-3 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 6-5 loss at Shelbyville Tuesday and an 18-7 loss, at home, to Pendleton Heights (15-3, 2-1) Thursday.

Against Shelbyville, the Golden Bears (12-4, 3-1) took the lead with a three-run fifth inning.

For the Marauders, they scored five runs on just two hits. Shelbyville had four errors.

Both Mt. Vernon hits were for extra bases. Shelby Rakosky had a solo home run. Ainsley Baer doubled and scored a run. Drew Fithian had an RBI.

Versus the Arabians, the Marauders hit three home runs, getting one each from Rakosky, Easton Wampler and Lexi Beeler. Rakosky, Wampler, Beeler, Graci Hines and Amya Gary each had two hits.

Mt. Vernon travels to Westfield today.

G-C beats Shenandoah

The Greenfield-Central softball team, after not playing for a week, picked up a 5-2 victory over Shenandoah Wednesday.

Madysen Herbert threw a complete game and struck out nine.

Makenna Rankins and Josie White had two RBIs each. Kristen Wineinger and Savannah Riall had two hits apiece.

Girls tennis

Royals pick up two wins

The Eastern Hancock girls tennis team picked up a pair of 5-0 victories Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Royals defeated Morristown, getting wins from No. 1 singles player Sophie Hardin (6-0, 6-2), No. 2 singles player Lexi Swauger (6-0, 6-0) and No. 3 Tori Parker (6-1, 6-0). In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Savanah Hardin and Mikayla Hardy won 6-0, 6-1. The No. 2 group of Sarah Clark and Pheebie Nelson won 6-0, 6-1.

The Royals’ shutout victim on Wednesday was Frankton. The team was scheduled to play Hauser Thursday.

G-C wins HHC match

Greenfield-Central’s girls tennis team defeated Hoosier Heritage Conference opponent Shelbyville 4-1 on Tuesday.

At No. 1 doubles, Jaclyn Layton and Emma Berty got the Cougars off to a good start with a 6-2, 6-1 win. At No. 2 doubles, Lauren Haffner and Hallie Smith followed with a victory by a 6-2, 6-1 count.

The match was clinched when Kammi Anderson won her No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-3. The fourth win came at No. 1 singles where Brianna McConnell, after trailing 5-2 in the second set, picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win.

On Thursday against Frankton, the Cougars won a home match, 5-0, to improve to 9-4 on the season.

At No. 1, McConnell won 6-2, 4-6, 10-8. No. 2 Anderson won 6-0, 6-3 and No. 3 Madison Succaw won 6-1, 7-5.

In doubles, Lauren Chastain and Berty won 6-1, 6-2 and Haffner and Smith won 6-1, 6-1.

Dragons beat Woodmen

The New Palestine girls tennis team upped its season record to 10-3 with a 5-0 sweep of Greenwood, Wednesday at NPJH.

The Dragons picked up straight set wins in all five victories. In singles play, the trio of Olivia Hasenkamp (6-0, 6-0), Kaitlyn Mitchell (6-1, 6-1) and Mia Knoop (6-0, 6-0) won all but two games.

In doubles play, Bethany Blachly and Josephine Harvey won 6-2, 6-2 and Alyssa Kauchak and Maddy Potter won 6-4, 6-3.

New Palestine is scheduled to host Shelbyville today.

MV falls to Noblesville

Mt. Vernon’s girls tennis team lost a 4-1 decision to Noblesville Tuesday.

The Marauders play host to Hancock County rival New Palestine Monday.

Boys volleyball

NP spikers beat LC

The New Palestine boys volleyball team defeated Lawrence Central 3-0 Wednesday, improving to 9-11 on the season.

The Dragons won by set scores of 25-12, 25-7, 25-15.

On Tuesday, New Palestine lost 3-0 to host Cardinal Ritter by set scores of 25-17, 25-15, 25-19.

The Dragons were scheduled to host Park Tudor Thursday.

Boys golf

MV golf is 2nd

Mt. Vernon’s boys golf team finished second in a three-team match with second-ranked Hamilton Southeastern and Lawrence North at Hawk’s Tail Golf Course in Greenfield last Thursday, April 27.

Nils Erkmanis and Asher Cotton each shot 39s for the Marauders. Mt. Vernon scored 163. HSE won with a 144. Lawrence North carded a 202.

Following Erkmanis and Cotton, Aaron Arkenau had a 41. Brady Pearson and Jace Lugar each shot 44s.
