Since a two-game losing streak knocked its winning percentage down to .500, New Palestine has continued to move as far away from the 50-50 point as possible.

Friday at East Central, the New Palestine baseball team won for the sixth straight time, beating the Trojans 11-5 in St. John.

The game was initially to be a New Palestine home game, but do to field conditions caused by rain, the contest was moved to East Central, which has an artificial turf field.

With two runs in the top of the seventh inning, the Dragons won 7-5, to improve their overall record to 11-5.

Wes Stiller had a home run and three RBIs. Jacob Morris went 3-for-3. Blaine Nunnally and Ben Morwick head had two hits and two runs scored.

Chase Ankney picked up the win with three innings of two-hit relief. He struck out three and walked two.

New Palestine travels to Warren Central Monday.

Girls track and field

Dragons place seventh in invite

The New Palestine girls track and field team finished seventh out of 10 teams at Friday’s Zionsville Invitational.

The Dragons scored 46 points. Brownsburg won with 118.

New Palestine was led by the second place finish of senior Quin Lumbley in the shot put. She had a distance of 40-feet, 1-inch.

Sydney Miller was fifth in the discus with a distance of 122-feet, 1-inch.

Both placed in their secondary throwing event. Miller was ninth in the shot put (35-feet, 11-inches). Lumbley was 10th in the discus (101-feet, 5-inches).

Freshman Abby Journay was sixth in the high jump (5-feet) and seventh in the 200-meter dash (27.00 seconds).

Rylee Hurst was eighth in the 400 (1:01.94).

The 4×400 relay team of Hurst, Oliva Frank, Tylar Whitaker and Journay finished fifth in 4:14.63. The 4×100 team of Rory Barnard, Taylor Burke, Frank and Journay finished eighth in 53.39 seconds.

The Dragons next competition is Wednesday’s Hancock County Meet at Mt. Vernon.

Boys track and field

Dragons tie for 8th at Zionsville

At Friday’s Zionsville Invitational, New Palestine’s boys track and field team tied for eighth place in the 10-team event.

The Dragons scored 17 points. Sage Halter finished fourth in the pole vault by clearing 14-feet.

Cody Crawmer was seventh in the 800-meter run (1:59.27) and James O’Dell was seventh in the 300 hurdles (43.53 seconds).

Crawmer, Conner Lapenta, Jake Cooper and Dylan Dragoo were seventh in the 4×400 relay (3:32.79).

Brownsburg won the meet with 181 points.

The Dragons next competition is Wednesday’s Hancock County Meet at Mt. Vernon.

Girls tennis

G-C defeats Knightstown, NC

Greenfield-Central’s girls tennis team picked up a 5-0 victory over Knightstown Wednesday.

The Cougars won all but six games.

At No. 1 singles, Brianna McConnell won 6-2, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Lauren Chastain and Emma Berty won 6-1, 6-2.

No. 2 singles player Kammi Anderson, No. 3 singles player Hallie Smith and the No. 2 doubles team of Olivia Capen and Lauren Haffner all won their matches 6-0, 6-0.

On Thursday, the Cougars beat Hoosier Heritage Conference foe New Castle 5-0.

McConnell won at No. 1 6-3, 6-4, Maddi Succaw won at No. 2 6-4, 6-2. Anderson, playing at No. 3, won her match 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play, Jaclyn Layton and Berty won 6-0, 6-0 and Chastain and Smith won 6-1, 6-4.

Greenfield-Central is back in action Monday with a home match against Rushville.

Dragons fall to Delta

Against No. 20 Delta, the New Palestine girls tennis team lost 4-1 Thursday in Muncie.

New Palestine (6-2, 3-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference) picked up its lone win at No. 2 singles. Kaitlyn Mitchell picked up a three-set win, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

No. 1 singles player Olivia Hasenkamp lost 6-3, 6-1. At No. 3, Mia Knoop fell 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, the tandem of Bethany Blachly and Josephine Harvey lost 6-2, 6-2. Maddy Potter and Alyssa Kauchak were defeated 6-0, 6-0.

The Dragons play in the Plainfield Invitational today.

Royals lose to Burris

On Wednesday, the Eastern Hancock girls tennis team lost 5-0 to Muncie Burris. The varsity’s record dropped to 4-3.

The team is scheduled to play at Knightstown Monday.
