Teen police academy applications available

GREENFIELD – Applications are available now for the 2023 Hancock County Teen Police Academy.

The academy, June 5-9, is free to Hancock County residents ages 14-17. Classes will include firearms training, drug investigations, tasers, traffic stops, physical training, drunken driving enforcement, character development and more. The program will be hosted at Greenfield-Central High School, 810 N. Broadway St., Greenfield with lunch provided daily. Learn more and apply at hancockin.gov/447/Community-Outreach or call Capt. Libraries to host events for families

HANCOCK COUNTY – Local libraries are offering several events in May for local families.

A music and movement class for ages 2-6 and their caregivers will be May 5 at the main Hancock County Public Library, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield. That library will also host a monster workshop crafting event for ages 4-8 May 17; both events have a waitlist to get in. Register at hcplibrary.org. Families with children ages birth to age 5 are encouraged to join a Discovery Play event 9:30-11:30 a.m. May 25 at the main branch; no need to sign up, just come and play.

At the Sugar Creek branch of the HCPL, youth of all ages are encouraged to join in a Chalkfest from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 20 at 5731 W. U.S. 52, New Palestine.

In Fortville, all ages are invited to a Play & Learn Storytime at 10:30 am. May 3, 10 and 17 at the Fortville-Vernon Township Public Library, 625 E. Broadway St., Fortville. A geography club for homeschoolers will be May 26. Learn more at fvtpl.org.

Free movies coming to local parks

GREENFIELD – Free movies will be shown to the community this summer and fall in Greenfield parks.

The 2023 Summer Movie Series was announced by Greenfield Parks and Recreation on social media. Due to a legal contract, movie names cannot be announced in print media, but more details can be found at facebook.com/greenfieldparks. Dates for movies are June 24 at Depot Street Park; July 13 at the Kathy Dowling Aquatic Center; July 19 at Depot Street Park; Aug. 19 at Brandywine Park; Sept. 16 at Beckenholdt Park; and Oct. 13 a the H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts. The movies are possible through a grant from MIBOR and Center Township.

Ivy Tech offers free summer courses

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana High School students grades 9-12 can enroll in free courses this summer at Ivy Tech Community College.

Free summer courses provide an opportunity for students to explore possible career options while earning college credits. Students who qualify for courses will receive free tuition and textbooks, with no limit on the number of courses students can take. To qualify, students must be Indiana residents at any high school, including current eighth graders entering ninth grade, graduating seniors, homeschool students and students at adult high schools.

Kindergarten 101 registration open

GREENFIELD – Registration is open for Kindergarten 101, a free, one-week program that provides incoming kindergarteners the opportunity to participate in many common kindergarten activities.

K101 will be July 17-21 for kindergarteners starting the 2023-24 school year. Students will learn about daily reading, morning meetings, small group activities, recess and lunch. A morning session and an afternoon session is available. The program is sponsored by Purdue Extension of Hancock County and is at JB Stephens Elementary School.
