New Palestine’s Michael Thorpe fanned eight and allowed six hits in a 2-1 complete-game victory, at home, over Greenfield-Central Wednesday.

The win was the fifth straight for the New Palestine baseball team and finished off a 2-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference sweep over Greenfield-Central. On Tuesday, at G-C, the Dragons won 13-1.

The Dragons are 10-5 overall and 4-4 in the HHC. Greenfield-Central dropped to 8-5-1 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

On Wednesday, Ben Morwick had an RBI-single. Nic Deering and Blaine Nunnally scored runs.

Adam Rickey had a double for the Dragons.

G-C’s Andrew Zellers had two hits, including a double.

Greenfield-Central travels to Lawrence Central today. New Palestine hosts East Central Friday.

Mt. Vernon remains unbeaten in HHC

Mt. Vernon improved to 8-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference and 13-2 overall with an 11-5 victory at Pendleton Heights Wednesday.

The Marauders had 13 hits. Nick Heitman, Gavin Johnston and Joseph Wilson each had three.

Heitman had four RBIs. Wilson drove in two and had a double. Johnston also had a two-base hit.

Mt. Vernon is back in action Monday with a home game against Brebeuf.

Girls softball

G-C drops first HHC game

Yorktown scored a run in its final at-bat and threw a runner out at the plate for the final out to hand Greenfield-Central a 2-1 loss Wednesday at G-C.

The Cougars are 1-1 in HHC play and 8-4 overall. Yorktown, ranked No. 8 in Class 3A, is 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

For Greenfield-Central, Olivia Roberts was 3-for-4 with a home run and double. Josie White had two hits. Pitcher Madysen Herbert struck out six and allowed only one earned run.

Greenfield-Central travels to Mt. Vernon Friday.

Royals win 11th game

With an 8-0 victory at Northeastern Wednesday, Eastern Hancock’s softball team won for the eighth straight time, improving its record to 11-2.

Kaylee Kline had a pair of home runs and three RBIs. Emma Bolding had a solo home run. Brooklyn Willis had two hits, including a double.

Tatem Adams threw a complete game shutout, striking out seven and scattering seven hits.

Eastern Hancock is in action today at Randolph Southern.

Boys Track and Field

Mt. Vernon wins Miller Invitational

Mt. Vernon’s boys track and field team won the Noblesville Miller Invitational Tuesday.

The Marauders won with 128 points. Greenfield-Central tied for fifth with 66 points.

Seven teams participated in the meet.

Mt. Vernon had a 1-2 finish in the 110-meter high hurdles with George Burhenn and Andres Langston. Burhenn won the 300 hurdles, too.

Langston won the 400-meter dash and was second in the high jump.

The Marauders won two of the three relays. Ahmed Saleh, Daylon King, Caden Cassada and Tristan Trevino won the 4×800 relay. Sebastian Sprague, Tre Jones, Trevino and Langston won the 4×400 relay.

Trevino added an individual win in the 800. Saleh won the 3200.

DJ Marble won the 200, was third in the 100 and joined Ren Davis, Jaden Gibson and Cameron Parsley for a third-place finish in the 4×100 relay.

For Greenfield-Central, Elliot Ryba had its lone win in the high jump. Griffen Wheeler finished second in the 800 and was part of the runner-up 4×800 relay team with Carter Crouch, David Wasson and Luke Haffner. Crouch, Wheeler, Aaron Lee and Michael Runions were third in the the 4×400 relay.

Girls Track and Field

G-C 4th, MV 5th at PH Invite

Greenfield-Central’s Savannah Lake won the 100-meter dash and set a new meet record with a time of 12.15 seconds.

She helped lead the Cougars to a fourth-place finish out of 10 teams in the Pendleton Heights Girls Track and Field Invitational.

The Cougars scored 69 points. Lake added a second-place finish in the 200 dash (25.6 seconds) and was part of the runner-up 4×100 relay (51.69 seconds) team of Jalyn Smith, Rachel Baker and Lauren Pechin.

Addison Buckley and Reagan Crouch finished second (48.19 seconds) and third (48.85 seconds) respectively in the 300 hurdles.

Mt. Vernon got third-place finishes from Mya Eppert (100 – 12.69 seconds) and Riley Nielsen (pole vault – 11-feet).

G-C competes next in Saturday’s Kokomo Relays.

Girls tennis

New Pal beats G-C, LC

The New Palestine girls tennis team defeated host Greenfield-Central 4-1 Tuesday.

The Dragons won all three singles matches.

At No. 1 singles, Olivia Hasenkamp won 6-3, 6-1. Kaitlyn Mitchell picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2. Mia Knoop won the No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, Bethany Blachly and Josephine Harvey won 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

On Wednesday, the Dragons won 5-0 at home against Lawrence Central.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Mitchell won 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2, Courtney Johnson won 6-0, 6-0. No. 3 singles player Maizy Haynes won 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, the Dragons teams won all 24 games. The team of Emily Appleby and Amelia Rojowski, played at No. 1 and won 6-0, 6-0. Kenzie Kleiman and Amelia Schneider won by the same score at No. 2 doubles.

The Dragons are 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.
