Area tennis standouts honored

With the 2022 season closed, individual honors for a number of Hancock County tennis players were announced.

The Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association has released its all-district and all-academic teams. All-state teams will be announced at a later date.

In addition, the Hoosier Heritage Conference released its all-conference team this week.

Individual sectional doubles champions, senior Bryce Wennen and sophomore Myles Wennen were among seven Hancock County players selected for the All-District 4 team.

Five county singles players were named to the team, including Mt. Vernon’s Adam Koon, New Palestine’s Moses Haynes, Eastern Hancock’s Zeke Dixon and Greenfield-Central’s C.J. Michalek and Chris Long.

Other singles players named all-district were Charlie Behrman (Muncie Burris), Trent Alfrey (New Castle), Jaden Hollingsworth (Richmond), Luke Gilman (Madison-Grant), Dalton Royal (Delta), Aidan Asher (Shelbyville) and Ryan Sebastian (Marion).

Doubles pairs joining the Wennen brothers were Riley Bratton/Colin McCrady (Delta), Ethan Darby/Raphael Sabijon (Yorktown), Sam Underhill/Braylon Cornwell (New Castle), Luke Morris/Kolton DeBoard (Connersville) and Drew Loyd/Charlie Sauser (Winchester).

Madison-Grant’s Tony Pitt was named the District 4 Coach of the Year.

The IHSTECA announced individual and team all-academic selections.

New Palestine’s Will Hahn was named IHSTECA Academic All-State. The Dragons were one of 61 teams to be named all-academic.

Players from Mt. Vernon, Greenfield-Central and New Palestine were selected to the All-Hoosier Heritage Conference team.

Koon, Michalek and Haynes earned All-HHC honors.

Other singles players selected to the squad included Alfrey, Royal and Asher.

For doubles, Mt. Vernon was represented by the tandem of Robbie Moore and Bryndan Wylie. Other doubles teams chosen were Bratton/McCrady, Darby/Sabijon and Underill/Cornwell.

The Hoosier Heritage Conference released its all-conference team, which included three county singles players; Adam Koon, Mt. Vernon; Moses Haynes, New Palestine and C.J. Michalek, Greenfield-Central.

Koon, Alfrey, Haynes and the doubles team of Darby/Sabijon were unanimous selections.

Mt. Vernon tied for second with Greenfield-Central in the HHC standings. Both were 5-2 in league matches. Delta won with a 6-1 record. New Palestine was seventh in the conference with a 1-6 mark.

Delta’s Tim Cleland was named Coach of the Year.
