Prep roundup: Dragons, Marauders remain in first-place tie

New Palestine’s baseball team scored two runs each in the second through fifth innings and won for the eighth straight time with an 8-2 victory over visiting Hoosier Heritage Conference opponent Delta Wednesday.

The Dragons improved to 15-2 overall and 8-2 in the HHC. With four conference games left, the Dragons are in a first-place tie with Mt. Vernon.

Against the Eagles, Wyatt Matheis hit a home run, scored twice and had three RBI. Nic Deering had a double and two RBI. Ben Hirschy and Adam Rickey each hit doubles.

Rigg Mahurin earned the complete game victory. He struck out eight and gave up four hits.

Marauders rally for HHC win

After trailing 2-0 after one inning, Mt. Vernon’s baseball team tied it with a run each in the second and third frames, and took the lead for good with a three-run fourth in an 8-2 victory at Hoosier Heritage Conference opponent New Castle Wednesday

With the win, the Marauders are 8-2 and tied for first place in the HHC with New Palestine. Mt. Vernon is 12-5 overall. New Castle dropped to 3-14 and 1-9.

Tristan Sitton and Andrew Boldt combined on a three-hitter. Sitton struck out seven in five innings and did not give up an earned run. Boldt struck out two in two innings.

Will Jacobs had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI. The Marauders hit six doubles, Cam Sullivan, Hayden Ford, Grant Payson and DJ Scheumann each hit one. Mason Meyer had two hits.

Cougars defeated by Arabians

Greenfield-Central’s baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Pendleton Heights at Molinder Field Wednesday.

The Cougars fell to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the HHC. The Arabians improved to 12-6 and 5-5.

Pendleton Heights took control with a four-run fourth inning.

For the Cougars, Zander Cobb had three hits. Parker Rhodes was the losing pitcher. He gave up two earned runs and struck out 10 in four innings.

Eastern loses MEC game

Eastern Hancock’s baseball team lost a Mid-Eastern Conference game Wednesday, at home, 10-6 to Shenandoah.

The Royals were hurt by committing seven errors, but were still in it late in the game.

After trailing 6-0, the Royals scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Raiders answered with four in the seventh.

Aidan Morris threw six innings and did not give up an earned run. He struck out three.

Colton Dishman had two hits and two RBI. Jalen Helderbrand had a hit and two RBI. Chase Stewart scored twice and was 2-for-4 with a double. Gavin Jenkins had an RBI and two stolen bases.

Boys volleyball

Dragons win two

On Tuesday, the team’s Senior Night, New Palestine’s boys volleyball team defeated Cardinal Ritter 3-0.

The Dragons won by set scores of 25-12, 25-21, 25-14.

Setter Kameron Engle had 26 assists, five service aces and six digs.

A balanced Dragon attack was led by Eli Greene, Daysen Wood and Jaxon Hinkle with six kills each. Senior Cade Rodgers and Chase Emberton each had four kills.

Greene was part of three blocks and Hinkle was part of two, including one solo.

Eli Martin had a team-high 11 digs. Aaron Smith had five. Maguire Gross added four service aces.

The match was Senior Night for both Rodgers and Matthew Everett.

On Wednesday, the Dragons defeated Lawrence Central 3-0 to even their overall record to 11-11.

Girls tennis

NP defeats Southwestern

New Palestine’s girls tennis team improved to 5-2 on the season with a 5-0 sweep of Southwestern (Shelby) Tuesday.

The Dragons won all but two games.

No. 1 singles player Kaitlyn Mitchell and No. 3 singles player Maizy Haynes each won matches in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 singles player Bethany Blachly won 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Josephine Harvey/Emily Appleby won 6-1, 6-0. The No. 2 group of Amelia Schneider/Riley Watts won 6-0, 6-0.

Cougars split matches

Greenfield-Central’s girls tennis team evened its record to 6-6 with a 5-0 victory at Rushville Wednesday.

All three singles matches were close, but the Cougars were able to pull them out.

At No. 1, Kate Gilkison won 6-4, 7-5. At No. 2, Tanessa O’Neal picked up a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win. At No. 3, Lauren Page was victorious 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, Hallie Smith/Lauren Haffner won 6-0, 6-0 and Anna McQueeney/Carly Means won 6-1, 6-2.

The Cougars dropped a 3-2 decision to Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Shelbyville on Senior Night Tuesday.

The team’s seniors include, Haffner, Smith, Emily Jones-Estelle, Gabi Skene, and Madi Succaw.

Succaw and Haffner won at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-2. Gilkison won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

Softball

Royals win 13th in a row

Eastern Hancock’s softball team extended its winning streak to 13 games with a 3-0 victory over Frankton Wednesday.

The Royals (13-1) scored one run in the first inning and two more in the fifth.

Junior pitcher Kenna Stewart threw a one-hitter and struck out 14.

Brooklyn Willis had three of the Royals six hits. She had a double, home run, two RBI, stole a base and scored two runs. Emily Hodges went 2-for-3 with a double.

Dragons suffer first loss

In a matchup of two of the top-ranked Class 4A softball programs, No. 3 New Palestine lost 5-1 at No. 6 Roncalli Wednesday.

Roncalli jumped out to a quick lead with a four-run first inning. The Dragons had just one hit, a solo home run from Katie Hirschy.

Cougars beat Raiders

Against visiting Shenandoah Wednesday, Greenfield-Central pulled away from a 6-4 game with a six-run fourth inning.

The Cougars softball team went on to a 15-9 victory over the Raiders to improve to 9-5 on the season.

Savvanna Riall had three hits, including a home run, three runs and three RBI. Leilani Forshey had two hits, with a solo home run and scored two runs.

Allison Hornaday had two hits, scored two runs and had three RBI. Ailea Dowdy had two hits and two RBI. Kristen Wineinger had three hits and scored three runs. Makenna Rankins scored two runs.

Madysen Herbert threw five innings and picked up the win. She struck out 12.

Marauders lose close HHC game

Mt. Vernon’s softball team dropped a 3-2 decision, at home, to Shelbyville, Tuesday.

Shelby Rakosky had three of Mt. Vernon’s six hits. She had a double and an RBI. Easton Wampler and Ainsley Baer also hit doubles.

Mt. Vernon pitcher Graci Hines threw all seven innings and gave up two earned runs and struck out one.

Shelbyville pitcher Cheyenne Eads struck out 15 and went 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles.
