Mt. Vernon boys soccer get first win

Mt. Vernon picked up its first win of the season, a 3-1 victory over visiting Warren Central Thursday.

Zach Johnson, Akseli Huopalahti and Brennan LaBelle had Mt. Vernon’s goals. Huopalahti and Carsen Brandon were credited with assists.

Mt. Vernon (1-2) plays its first conference match today at 10 a.m. at New Castle.

Dragons lose on penalty kicks

In a matchup between two of the teams that tied for a share of the 2021 Hoosier Heritage Conference championship, New Palestine lost 2-1, on penalty kicks, to visiting Yorktown Thursday.

Tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime, Yorktown won the shootout 5-3.

In the opening half, freshman Cole Christopher, on an assist from Elliott Canova, scored in the 24th minute.

Canova, Andon Colclazier and Lennon Pottle connected on penalty kicks for the Dragons.

New Palestine (1-1, 0-1) is back in action today with a 10 a.m. match at Warren Central.

Cougars have second scoreless tie

For the second straight match, Greenfield-Central finished in a 0-0 tie.

At G-C on Thursday, the Cougars tied Cathedral. Earlier in the week, they had a scoreless tie against Ben Davis.

The Cougars are 1-0-2 and have not given up a goal this season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordin Jones had 13 saves against the Irish.

Greenfield-Central plays host to the Cougar Cup today. The Cougars take on Decatur Central at 2 p.m. Consolation and championship contests will follow. East Central and Franklin Central are also competing for the cup.

Girls soccer

Marauders score seven goals in win at Tipton

Mt. Vernon had seven goals from six different players in a 7-0 win over host Tipton Thursday.

Addy Wong scored twice. Hannah Monroe, Mattie Isger, Aya Renforth, Ellie Gawrys and Emma Gasiorek each had one goal.

Mariam Konate and Monroe each had two assists. Other assists were by Kylie Brandes, Addison Lockwood and Isger.

Mt. Vernon (1-1) travels to Franklin Community for an 11:30 a.m. match today.

Dragons improve to 2-0

Allie Blum scored twice to lead New Palestine to a 4-0 victory over Ben Davis Thursday.

Anna Luker had a goal and an assist. Neveah Gebhart added a goal. Mia Knoop and Bethany Aldridge also had assists.

The Dragons play host to Lawrence North today at 11:30 a.m.

Volleyball

Mt. Vernon evens record at 2-2

The Mt. Vernon volleyball team won 3-0, at home, against Heritage Christian Thursday.

The Marauders won by set scores of 25-20, 25-14, 25-15.

Mt. Vernon will play in the Western Boone Invitational today.

Dragons defeat Golden Eagles

With a 3-1 win over visiting Guerin Catholic, New Palestine is 3-1 on the season.

The Dragons defeated the visiting Golden Eagles Thursday, 25-16, 25-20, 24-26, 25-20.

Lauren Wilson had 24 kills, 12 digs and two service aces. Reagan Kleiman had 13 kills and four blocks. Setter Isabella Gizzi had 42 assists. Libero Honour Mallory had 18 digs.

The Dragons welcome Hamilton Heights on Wednesday. The junior varsity game starts at 6 p.m.

Eastern loses to Lincoln

In a home match Thursday, Eastern Hancock lost 3-1 to Cambridge City Lincoln.

The Royals won the opening set 26-24 and then dropped the next three, 25-18, 25-19, 25-9.

Eastern Hancock is 2-3 on the year and travel to the Shenandoah Invitational today.

Girls golf

New Pal beats LC, Southport

New Palestine shot a 180 to defeat Lawrence Central (195) and Southport (208) Thursday.

Zoe Nelson had the low score for the Dragons with a 43. Kate Stanfield shot 44. Lauren Appleby finished with a 45. Hanna Beller and Katie Kelley each carded 48s. Lily Kirchner and Janie Hamilton both shot 50s.

New Palestine is 4-1 on the season and plays host to the New Palestine Invitational today.

Boys tennis

G-C opens with impressive victory

Greenfield-Central started its boys tennis season Thursday with a 5-0 win over Lawrence Central.

Chris Long (6-0, 6-0), Caden Robertson (6-0, 6-0) and Nolan Frye (6-1, 6-2) each won singles matches.

In doubles, Eli Conderman and Michael Kwiatkowski won 6-0, 6-1. Luke Sitzman and Alex Michalek won 6-0, 6-0.

The Cougars will play in the Franklin Community tournament today.

Dragons lose close one

At Yorktown Thursday, New Palestine’s boys tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision.

The Dragons wins came in singles play. At No. 1, Moses Haynes won 6-1, 6-3. At No. 2, Arjomand Khokar won 6-0, 6-2.
