Grider, Vernon get first VB coaching wins

For one, it was the first win as a high school head coach.

For another, it was the first win at his new school.

Mt. Vernon’s Samantha Grider and Greenfield-Central’s Jon Vernon had victorious coaching debuts Saturday.

Grider, a first-time high school head coach, led the Mt. Vernon volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Greenwood.

Vernon, a veteran coach in his first season at G-C, is off to a 1-0 start after a 3-1 victory at home over Waldron.

The Marauders won by set scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 25-18.

Easton Wampler had a team-high nine kills. Kate Ferguson followed with eight.

Defensive specialist Libby Gee-Weiler had 20 digs. Sophia Damer had four service aces and three total blocks. Setter Ava Whitmore had 22 assists.

The Cougars won by a count of 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21.

Mya Grigsby filled up the stat sheet with 1o kills, 14 digs, and 22 assists.

She also had six of the team’s 19 service aces.

Harper Holden led in kills with 11.

Avery Roberts led the team in digs with 15. Katie Muegge had three blocks.

Dragons win, Royals go 2-1

In other county volleyball action, Eastern Hancock opened play at the Morristown Invitational with a 2-1 record.

The Royals defeated Northeastern (2-1) and Jac-Cen-Del (2-0) and lost to Rising Sun (2-1).

At Scecina on Saturday, New Palestine won 3-0 in its opening match of the season.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-20, 25-9.

Lauren Wilson had 11 kills and tied for the team-high in digs with nine.

Bella Brownfield had three service aces. Setter Isabella Gizzi had 32 assists. Reagan Kleiman had five blocks. Libero Honour Mallory had nine digs.

Boys cross country

Mt. Vernon 10th, G-C 11th at Valley Kickoff

Out of 37 teams, Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central placed 10th and 11th, respectively, at the Valley Kickoff held at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Saturday.

Mt. Vernon had 277 points. G-C had 283. Center Grove won with 132.

Cougars senior Griffen Wheeler led county runners with a ninth-place finish. Wheeler finished the 5K race in 16:14.4.

Mt. Vernon’s Tristan Trevino was 13th in 16:25.3, one spot ahead of Greenfield-Central’s Liam Brinkruff (16:25.7).

G-C freshman Luke Haffner was 27th with a time of 17:03.7. Mt. Vernon’s Ahmed Saleh placed 35th in 17:14.3.

There were 345 runners in the race.

Girls cross country

Hauser places 11th at Valley Kickoff

Mt. Vernon freshman Hannah Hauser placed 11th out of 328 runners in the Valley Kickoff held at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Saturday.

As a team, Mt. Vernon was 15th of 32 entrants. Greenfield-Central placed 28th.

Hauser ran a time of 20:19.2 for the 5K race. Emma Gale was 58th in 21:46.8.

Lexie Copeland was the top finisher for the Cougars. She placed 128th in 23:04.2.

North Central won the event with 59 points, placing all five of its scoring runners in the Top 20.

Mt. Vernon had 360 points. Greenfield-Central had 826.

Girls golf

Dragons ninth, Cougars 13th at Lapel

New Palestine placed ninth, and Greenfield-Central finished 13th, out 16 teams at the Lapel Invitational Saturday at The Edge Golf Course in Anderson.

Katie Kelley led the Dragons with a 90. The Dragons had a team score of 382.

Zoe Nelson scored a 95, followed by Lauren Appleby with 98. Hanna Beeler and Kate Stanfield each had 99s.

Greenfield-Central had a team score of 411. Sydnie Wherry had the low score among all Hancock County golfers with a round of 76.

Ella Neill shot 110. Laney Elliott carded a 112 and Reagan Breese finished with a 113. Della Hedge rounded out the G-C five with a 137.

Boys soccer

Kinnaman scores hat trick in Cougar win

Bryce Kinnaman scored all of the goals in Greenfield-Central’s 3-0 victory at Lawrence North on Saturday.

Drew Davidson had an assists. Goalkeeper Jordin Jones had eight saves.

Marauders fall in opener

In the season-opening match for both teams, Mt. Vernon dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Hamilton Southeastern on Saturday.

Zach Johnson had the lone goal for the Marauders.

The match was tied 1-1 at halftime. Hamilton Southeastern is ranked No. 8 in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association preseason poll.

Girls soccer

Cougars open with win over Decatur Central

On the home turf Saturday, Greenfield-Central’s girls soccer team opened the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Decatur Central.

Off a corner kick from Courtney Vaughn, freshman Paige McCarley opened scoring just 12 minutes into the match.

Tied 1-1, McCarley scored her second goal on an assist from Kalyn Moss.

Goalkeeper Jessica Merritt had six saves.
