Work One’s scarecrow is displayed in front of city hall. Greenfield businesses, nonprofits and families were invited to design scarecrows as part of a Halloween-themed promotion by the Riley Home and Greenfield Main Street.

“…Waving empty sleeves, the “scarecrow” beckons to the feathered thieves that perch, and perk their nimble heads away,” wrote James Whitcomb Riley in the 1870s. Nearly 150 years later, Main Street is his hometown is bristling with whimsical straw-stuffed denizens to celebrate Halloween and autumn. The display of scarecrows — crafted by families, businesses and nonprofits and set up downtown and at the Riley Home — is sponsored by Greenfield Main Street and the Riley Home. Judges will award prizes, and winners will be announced at 7 p.m. on Halloween in the Riley Gardens. The displays will remain until Nov. 15. Photographs by Tom Russo | Daily Reporter
