Greenfield’s Gibson thrives in Phillies debut

Greenfield-native Kyle Gibson has settled in quickly with his new MLB team.

Gibson, 33, a 2021 MLB All-Star pitcher, was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies last week at the trade deadline along with pitcher Ian Kennedy in a six-player trade with the Texas Rangers.

Gibson made his Phillies debut on Sunday, pitching 6.2 innings to earn the win over the host Pittsburgh Pirates, 15-4. The Phillies right-handed starter limited the Pirates to five hits and two earned runs with two walks issued and five strikeouts.

The quality-start lowered Gibson’s season ERA to 2.86 with a 1.17 WHIP and 99-43 strikeout-walk ratio in 119.2 innings pitched.

Gibson improved his season record to 7-3. Prior to the trade, Gibson went 6-3 with a 2.87 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 19 starts for the Rangers.

Moving over to the senior circuit from the American League, Gibson generated 14 swinging strikes, including six with his changeup, according to NBCSportsEdge.com.

Gibson’s next start is tonight against the visiting, National League East leading New York Mets (56-52). The Phillies carry a 56-53 record and trail the Mets by half a game in the NL East standings.
