The Sideline: H.S. girls tennis state tournament pairings drawn

The sectional pairings for the 46th annual IHSAA girls tennis state tournament were revealed on Monday night.

A total of 305 schools were drawn and placed into brackets for the team state tournament which begins on Wednesday and runs through Saturday based on each host site, which determines the dates and time for each match.

Among the 64 sectional sites statewide, defending champion Mt. Vernon will play host during the Sectional 42 tournament. The Marauders are aiming for a sixth straight sectional title.

Eastern Hancock drew the tournament’s first-round bye. The Royals will face the quarterfinal winner between Greenfield-Central and New Palestine in the semifinal round on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Greenfield-Central and New Palestine will vie for a semifinal berth in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

The other semifinal match will pit Mt. Vernon against Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Pendleton Heights on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The championship match is scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Royals hoops tourney approaching

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters will be conducting its annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament, sponsored by Hancock Health and Ninestar Connect, on Saturday, May 29 at Eastern Hancock Schools.

The tournament has several divisions from first grade through open divisions for both male and female adult players. There is also a B division for high school boys that do not play on a junior varsity or varsity basketball team.

The entry fee is $80 for early registration. The entry fee increases to $100 after May 24. Entries received by May 24 are guaranteed a tournament t-shirt.

Gibson tosses eighth quality start

Greenfield-Central graduate Kyle Gibson pitched his eighth consecutive quality start on Saturday, but the Texas Rangers’ right-handed starter didn’t factor in the decision.

Gibson allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 7.0 innings against the Houston Astros. He left with the game tied 2-2, but the visiting Rangers eventually lost 6-2.

At 3-0 on the season, the 33-year-old carries a 2.32 ERA and has amassed 44 strikeouts with 17 walks in 54.1 innings pitched. His batting average against is .194 to date with 38 hits allowed, three home runs and 14 earned runs charged.

Gibson hasn’t permitted more than three earned runs in a start through eight appearances since allowing five on April 1 at Kansas City.

His next start is projected to be during this coming weekend’s home series for the Rangers against the Astros.
