HANCOCK COUNTY — Gun, drug and other felony charges were filed against three people stemming from separate incidents this past week in the county.

Terrance Kenshan Bowens, 43, Indianapolis, was arrested and charged with a Level 4 felony count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon on Sunday, May 2. According to a probable cause affidavit, sheriff’s deputies linked Bowens to a gun found in a car after they were dispatched to the 4300 block of West U.S. 40 to check out a suspicious person after three people were seen banging on a door.

Deputies found the vehicle described in the incident and pulled it over after it had crossed the center line in the 5600 block of West U.S. 40, the affidavit said. After the driver gave police consent to search the car, they found a handgun under the seat where Bowens was sitting. While Bowens denied knowledge of the handgun, the driver told deputies the vehicle belonged to Bowens. He was transported to the county jail; two other people in the car were not charged, the affidavit said. Bowens made an initial appearance Tuesday, May 4, in Hancock County Superior Court 1, where a $10,000 cash bond was set. He was still listed as an inmate in the county jail at the Daily Reporter’s deadline on Thursday, May 6.

In another incident, Katherine Kennedy, 26, Greenfield, has been charged with a Level 4 felony count of possession of a narcotic drug. She also appeared Tuesday in Hancock County Superior Court 1 for an initial hearing. She was not taken to the jail due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, she was issued a summons to appear.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an officer from the McCordsville Police Department observed a vehicle with an improper plate at the Family Express gas station in the 5000 block of West Broadway on Friday, April 30. The officer followed the vehicle and pulled it over for erratic driving in the 6300 block of West Broadway. With the help of a K-9, police found a quantity of a crystalline, rocklike substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Also discovered was a quantity of a brownish powder identified as heroin. A passenger in Kennedy’s vehicle, Jonathan Wright, is facing a Level 6 felony count of possession of methamphetamine and also was issued a summons.

Elsewhere, Erykah Jade Early, 22, Greenwood, is facing a Level 5 felony count of altering a firearm’s identifying marks and four misdemeanor charges after being pulled over for dangerous driving May. 2. According to a probable cause affidavit, officers with the Greenfield Police Department caught up with Early in the 6100 block of North State Road 9 after a report of a car being driven erratically. Early and a passenger in her vehicle falsely identified themselves to officers, the affidavit said.

While speaking to Early, officers were advised a gun loaded with ammunition and a small clear plastic bag containing Oxycodone pills were in the vehicle. After further inspection of the handgun, police discovered the serial number had been purposely scratched off. Early made an initial appearance on Tuesday, during which a $3,500 cash bond was set. She was still listed as an inmate in the county jail at the Daily Reporter’s deadline on Thursday, May 6.
