FORTVILLE — A Fortville police officer was recognized for his assistance in the search for a missing Delaware County child in March.

In a letter to the Fortville Police Department, Muncie Police Department Deputy Chief Chris Deegan commended Fortville’s and McCordsville’s police departments and Fortville officer Zach Petrey in particular for their efforts in helping to locate the missing 3-year-old in late March.

An estranged relative was reported to have taken the child, and the investigation led police to believe they were possibly headed to the Fortville-McCordsville area. The search began the night of March 23 and ended around 3 a.m. March 24 after finding the child safe at a residence.

Deegan said the search would not have been successful without Petrey’s and other officers’ knowledge of the area and their willingness to help search an extensive vicinity.
