County adds COVID-19 death; toll now at 140

HANCOCK COUNTY — The county added a COVID-19 death on Wednesday, raising its total to 140.

The victim was a man in his 70s who died on May 2, according to information from the Indiana State Department of Health. He was the county’s first novel coronavirus death since April 10.

Hancock County also added 22 known cases of the virus Wednesday, raising that total to 8,225. Its COVID-19 advisory level remained yellow, the second least severe.

Indiana on Thursday added 10 COVID-19 deaths, for a total of 12,960; and 1,160 cases, for a total of 725,353.

Almost 30,000 Hancock County residents age 16 and older were fully vaccinated from the virus as of early Wednesday, nearly half of that population. More than 35,000 have received the first dose in a two-dose series, more than 57% of the eligible population.

Statewide, more than 2 million 16 and older are fully vaccinated, about 37% of that population. Almost 2.4 million getting a two-dose vaccine have received their first shot, more than 43% of the eligible population.
