INDIANAPOLIS — The New Palestine girls basketball team dropped a 62-38 decision Saturday at defending state champion Lawrence North.

Faith Hensel led the Dragons with 10 points. Anna Ackerman added nine, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Rachel Kelley, Koryn Marshall and Khloe Patterson scored four each. Isabella Gizzi scored three points, while Grace Marshall and Whitney Miller each tallied two.

The Dragons fell behind 20-4 after a quarter and 44-18 at halftime. LN led 53-27 after three before the Dragons outscored the Wildcats 11-9 in the final period.

The Dragons are now 2-1 on the season. They next play tonight at home against Rushville.

Marauders tame Lions in OT

The Mt. Vernon girls basketball team battled back to defeat host Rushville, 54-49, in overtime on Saturday.

Up 20-19 at halftime, the Mt. Vernon Marauders pushed their lead to 34-31 after three quarters, but the Lions rallied and tied the game with a 16-point fourth.

In overtime, the Marauders reclaimed the lead for good, outscoring Rushville 7-2 to improve their season record to 2-1.

Mt. Vernon returns to the court this Saturday at home against East Central at 7:30 p.m.

Swimming

Dragons’ girls swimming splits tri-meet

The New Palestine girls swim team split with Greenwood and Roncalli on Thursday.

The Dragons beat Roncalli 62-40 and dropped a 54-48 decision to Greenwood. It was the first victory over Roncalli and the closest result against Greenwood in recent memory.

The Dragons were led by the relay team of Sullie Leavell, Kyleigh Turner, Katelyn Trimpe and Adrianna Huston. The quartet won the 200-free relay and finished second in the 400-free relay.

Turner and Kayleigh Wright finished second and third in the 50 freestyle. Turner and Trimpe were also second and third in the 100 freestyle.

Alayna Walker and Izzy Napier placed second and third in diving.

Leavell placed second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 backstroke. Huston was third in both the 200 free and 500 free. Lillie Poag was also third in the 100 breaststroke.

The Dragons are now 3-1 on the season. They next compete Dec. 1 at home against Greenfield-Central, which will also be the opening night for the boys team.

Cougars win Turkey Breast Invite

The Greenfield-Central girls swim team kicked off its season by winning the Turkey Breast Invite on Saturday.

G-C won with 168 points ahead of Oak Hill (157), Bishop Chatard (52), Eastern Hancock (24) and Indian Creek (15).

Ariel Niemeier, Norah Johnson and Mary Ellen Stratman all were four-event winners for the Cougars. They won both of their individual events and joined with Ellei Coleman for wins in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Coleman was second in both her individual events. Reagan Crouch placed second in diving for the Cougars.

Wrestling

Cougars win South Dearborn Invite

The Greenfield-Central wrestling team, fielding a young lineup including four freshmen and three sophomores, opened its season Saturday going 3-0 in a triple dual at South Dearborn.

The Cougars started the day with a hard-fought win over North Posey, 41-31. They continued with a 56-15 win over South Dearborn and closed with a 76-0 shutout of Tri.

Dakota Herald (120 pounds), Zeke Holden (126), Matt Wickham (132), Cameron Burrus (138), Clay Guenin (152), Brady Durnell (160) and Jacob Blevens (220) each finished 3-0 for the Cougars.

Kannon Zuber (113), Shane Stough (170), Sly Blevens (182) and Scott Stanley (195) were 2-1 on the day.

Next up for the Cougars is a home dual with Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Pendleton Heights Wednesday for the Cougars’ annual Hall of Fame night. This year, 2014 graduate Tyler Beeson will be inducted into the GC Wrestling Hall of Fame.
