The Mt. Vernon Marauders have clearly put their loss against Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Yorktown behind them.

After falling to the Tigers, 1-0, on Sept. 12, the Mt. Vernon girls soccer team has put together a six-game winning streak, including a sound 7-2 victory over HHC foe Pendleton Heights on Monday night.

The Marauders are now 12-2 on the season and finished 6-1 in league games, which puts them in line for second in the conference behind Yorktown (5-0 HHC).

At home against the PH Arabians, the Marauders built their lead in the first half, scoring three goals before pulling away further with four more in the second.

Mt. Vernon’s Anna Isger erupted with a team-leading four goals. Rylie Pearson had two goals and Shay Shipley added one goal.

Mattie Isger dished out three assists. Maddie Swingle had an assist. Riley Britt earned the win in goal.

“We started slow but after missing several shots we found the range and connected on a lot of passes to score,” Mt. Vernon head coach Steve Williams said. “A good effort for the last home game. A shout out to our seniors: Anna Isger, Taylor Bostic, Katie Gawrys, Rylie Pearson, Shay Stindle, Anna Miller and Macy Wilson for their high-level of play and effort this season.”

Dragons win HHC finale

The New Palestine girls soccer team won its conference finale Monday, beating host Shelbyville, 5-0.

Lucy Miller drilled a penalty kick to start the scoring. Cate Black, Allie Blum, Maddy Potter and Lydia Sams also scored for the Dragons, with Sams tallying her first varsity goal.

Bethany Aldridge, McKenzie Davis, Moriah Corey and Maggie Murphy added assists. Whitney Miller and Grace Hasenkamp shared the shutout in goal.

The Dragons finish the conference season with a 5-2 mark and are in third place in the league. The Dragons are 9-5 overall and finish the regular season today at Center Grove.

Volleyball

Dragons sweep Flashes 3-0

The New Palestine volleyball team beat Franklin Central 25-13, 25-18, 25-21 Monday.

Jesi Hall led the offense with 14 kills, while Olivia Ellis and Jada Hausz added nine kills each. Kaelyn Armstrong had eight kills and nine digs. Sarah Adam had a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs. Grace Myers had 13 digs.

The Dragons are now 16-3 and hosted HHC foe Yorktown Tuesday.

Boys Tennis

Royals finish third at EH Invite

The Eastern Hancock boys tennis team placed third at the Eastern Hancock Invitational on Saturday.

The Royals tallied 16 points behind Lapel (26) and Oldenburg Academy (18).

Eastern Hancock had one champion in the event with Nolan Stout at No. 3 singles. Stout, a junior, won his first-round match 6-0, 6-0 against Blackford before defeating Lapel’s Camden Gooding 6-2, 6-3 in the finals.

Nate Cape and Peyton Stephens were second at No. 2 doubles, falling to Oldenburg in the finals 6-4, 6-4. The duo won their first match by default.

Kodey Huff bounced back from his first-round loss to win in the consolation round 6-0, 6-0 against Blackford at No. 1 singles.

Zeke Dixon followed suit, losing 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round at No. 2 singles before winning in the consolation bracket finals 6-0, 6-1 over Blackford.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Bryce Wennen and Wyatt Sutton won 6-0, 6-0 over Blackford in the consolation bracket after falling 6-1, 6-3 in the first round against Lapel’s Corbin Renihan and Landon Bair.
