MUNCIE — The Mt. Vernon Marauders ran through the competition on Saturday to win their second straight Muncie Burris Invitational team title.

The Marauders’ boys tennis team finished 3-0 against Yorktown, Randolph Southern and host Muncie Burris at Ball State University to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Mt. Vernon won 4-1 in the opening round against Muncie Burris and advanced to face Randolph Southern, who they swept 5-0. In their final matchup, the Marauders defeated Yorktown 4-1.

Chris Hays was 3-0 at No. 2 singles. Joe Bowsher was also unbeaten on the day at No. 3 singles. Haiden Rose finished 1-2 at No. 1 singles falling to Burris’ all-state singles player and to Yorktown.

The No. 1 doubles team of Owen Koon and Dallas Turner went 3-0 along with the No. 2 doubles team of Andrew Jones and Logan Leroy.

Cougars tame

Bulldogs

The Greenfield-Central boys tennis team defeated host Lapel 4-1 on Saturday to improve to 2-0 on the year.

The JV team also won 6-3.

Winners for the Cougars included Carson Gibson, Robbie Dye, Matt Hyre, Nick Grandstaff, Garrett Neumeister, Chris Long, Caden Robertson, Casey Hunt, CJ Michalek, Eli Conderman, Evan Houser and Michael Sitzamn.

Dragons drop close match at Yorktown

The New Palestine tennis team dropped a close 3-2 decision Thursday in its conference opener at Yorktown.

The Dragons’ victories came from Caleb Davis at No. 2 singles (6-3, 6-2) and Zach Au in a super-tiebreaker at No. 3 singles (5-7, 7-6(5), 10-7).

Boys Soccer

Dragons fall in road match

A young New Palestine boys soccer team played a strong match, but dropped a 2-0 decision Saturday at Warren Central.

The Dragons (0-3) continue their six-game season-opening roadtrip Tuesday at Whiteland.

Marauders blank Trojans

The Mt. Vernon boys soccer team shut out the New Castle Trojans 4-0 on the road Saturday.

The Marauders posted three first-half goals to take a commanding lead early and added a fourth goal in the second half.

Zach Johnson got MV on the score board first with an assist from Joseph Knowlton. Aiden Cappelletti added a second goal on an assist from Tyler Webb and Johnson got his second goal off an assist from Webb.

Shortly into the second half Webb got onto the score board himself on an assist from Brennan LaBelle.

Girls Golf

NP finishes sixth at Invitational

The New Palestine golf team continued to show improvement, shooting a 403 in Saturday’s New Palestine Invitational.

The Dragons finished sixth in the nine-team event, which was their second 18-hole tournament of the season.

Megan Diller led the Dragons with a 91. Zoe Nelson added a 100. Abby Belgin and Kate Stanfield each shot 106, while Hanna Beller carded a 112.

Cougars win NP Invite

The Greenfield-Central Cougars scored a 351 to win the New Palestine Invitational on Saturday.

Heritage Christian was second at 351, while Mt. Vernon was third at 381.

Caroline Gibson and Haley Hoagland led the Cougars with a 77 and 87, respectively. Tandess O’Neal shot a 90, while Sydnie Wherry carded a 97 to finish the scoring.

Cross Country

Cougars win at Indian Creek

The Greenfield-Central boys cross-country team finished first at the Indian Creek Invitational on Saturday.

The Cougars tallied 29 points with Whiteland second at 55, Martinsville third at 90 and Indian Creek at 105.

Greenfield-Central had a strong team showing by placing all five scorers in the top 10 and three more in the top 20.

The Cougars were led by Matt Wickham’s third-place finish. Following Wickham was Austin Nigh (5th), Griffen Wheeler (6th), Liam Brinkruff (7th), and Chris Ross (8th).

Also running for the Cougars were Lucas Tutrow (13th), Jacob Presser (14th), Morgan Flanagan (19th), Luke Muckerheide (21st), and Matt Parker (28th).
