INDIANAPOLIS — The Greenfield-Central volleyball team continued its winning ways on Monday night, sweeping host Scecina Memorial 3-0.

The Cougars improved to 2-0 on the season with a solid 25-17, 25-22, 25-4 victory behind Ava Antic’s second straight double-double effort.

Antic finished the match with 12 kills and 17 digs. Junior setter Morgan Hornaday totaled 12 digs and 18 assists. Senior Ali Knecht had 18 assists.

Kenley Carpenter, a senior, had seven kills and a key block in a back-and-forth second set that shifted the momentum for the Cougars. G-C followed with a 3-0 run to win.

Rachel Campbell led the way on defense for the Cougars with 21 digs. Molly Schwarzkopf and Brooke Herrell both added seven kills apiece.

“I believe that we carried our momentum from Saturday’s match into today’s,” G-C head coach Ron Heck said. “We have been talking about getting our middles involved more in the offense, and I believe that we had a very balanced attack in tonight’s match.”

Marauders knock off Fighting Irish

The Mt. Vernon volleyball team made it three straight over Cathedral on Monday night, defeating the 15th-ranked Fighting Irish 3-1.

The visiting Marauders (2-0) won the first set 25-23 and later faced a deadlock after Cathedral took the second 25-23.

Mt. Vernon rolled in the third set, 25-17, but it faced an 11-3 deficit in the fourth before putting together a 22-4 run to win 25-15.

The victory marked Mt. Vernon’s third straight over Cathedral during the regular season since 2018.

Cecilia Bulmahn had 17 kills and 17 digs for the Marauders, while Tatum Fitzgerald and Abby Herman led the back court with 25 digs. Macy Lyons stood strong with six blocks. Meredith Hohnbaum and Bulmahn finished with three blocks each.

Libby Gee-Weiler and Delaney Bowser both recorded three aces.

Dragons rout Connersville in sweep

The New Palestine volleyball team dominated during its home opener Monday, sweeping Connersville 25-5, 25-9, 25-15.

Kaelyn Armstrong led the way with 11 kills. Reagan Kleiman had seven kills. Trinity Oertel had four aces and seven digs. Isabella Gizzi added 25 assists.

“We played a really good match today,” Dragons coach Kelli Gabehart said. “We made minimal errors and our hitters looked strong especially Reagan and Kaelyn. Trinity had a stellar night from behind the service line.”

Dragons win opener with shutout

The New Palestine girls soccer team opened its season Monday with a dominant performance against Perry Meridian, blanking the host Falcons 4-0.

The Dragons outshot the Falcons 27-0. Addie Halter tallied two goals and an assist. Anna Luker had a goal and two assists. Freshman Hannah Webb also scored a goal in her varsity debut. Allie Blum had an assist.

The defense held tight throughout the game, not allowing a shot on goal. Whitney Miller, Grace Hasenkamp and Jaeda Jeffries combined on the shutout. Vivian Miller was named the player of the game in her varsity debut.

Marauders fall to Trojans

The Mt. Vernon girls soccer team put up a fight on Monday night, but the host Marauders were also shorthanded, leading to a 2-1 loss to Bishop Chatard.

Both teams tied with 10 shots on goal apiece and were deadlocked 1-1 after the first half. However, a second-half goal by the Trojans held up despite seven saves by Mt. Vernon goalkeeper Riley Britt.

Mariam Konate recorded the Marauders’ first-half goal.

Boys Tennis

Royals open with win

Eastern Hancock’s boys’ tennis team got off to a good start with a 5-0 win at home over Randolph Southern on Monday.

The Royals’ singles players made quick work of their opponents. No. 1 Kodey Huff won 6-2, 6-2. No. 2 Zeke Dixon was victorious 6-0, 6-2, and No. 3 Nolan Stout swept all games in a 6-0, 6-0 triumph.

In doubles, at No. 1, Bryce Wennen and Nate Cape won 4-6, 6-4 and 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker. Peyton Stephens and Avery Patrick won at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-2.

Marauders open new court with win

The Mt. Vernon boys tennis team christened its new courts with a 4-1 victory over Shenandoah on Monday night.

Last season, the Marauders didn’t play a single match at home and competed at neighboring Hamilton Southeastern routinely.

Back at home in 2020, Mt. Vernon swept both doubles matches and two singles contests to win.

Owen Koon and Dallas Turner led the way at No. 1 doubles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Logan LeRoy and Andrew Jones teamed to win 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. Chris Hays won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Joe Bowsher won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

“New courts, no fanfare, no ribbon cutting, no speeches … We are all business and we really, really loved playing someone, anyone. Our guys work hard, play hard, and I was proud of our effort, if our tennis wasn’t the greatest. A 4-1 win versus improved Shenandoah is always a great thing,” MV coach Gabe Muterspaugh said.

Dragons drop season opener

The New Palestine boys tennis team dropped a close 3-2 match to a senior-laden Greensburg team Monday in the Dragons’ opener.

The Dragons swept the doubles, with Ethan Haeberle and Devon Bird playing inspired tennis and winning 6-2, 7-6(3). Jackson Havel and Zayden Stiller won 7-5, 6-3.

Girls Golf

Diller leads NP golf to victory

The New Palestine girls golf team edged out Whiteland 214-216 on Monday at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield.

Senior Megan Diller led the way, earning medalist honors with a 43. Kate Stanfield shot 54, Abby Belgin 56 and Hanna Beller 61. Ava Hasecuster (65) and Emily Hunter (66) rounded out the varsity.

Cougars win fifth straight

The Greenfield-Central girls golf team improved to 5-0 on the regular season with a 182-236 win against Beech Grove on Monday night.

Caroline Gibson’s 39 was good for match medalist, while Sydnie Wherry shot a personal-best round of 43. Tandess O’Neal turned in a 45, and Brynn Elliott’s 55 finished the scoring.
