To the editor:

The League of Women Voters Hancock County regrets that we will be unable to offer local forums and debates before the upcoming primary election. While we have investigated alternative methods by which to offer safe, online forums, we were unable to accomplish this effectively. We have, however, contributed for the first time to VOTE411.ORG, which is a website that lists the candidates and their responses to pertinent questions. This is a free, online resource provided by the national League of Women Voters.

We encourage all citizens to visit vote411.org. Look for “MENU” in the upper left-hand corner of the page. You will find “VOTING IN MY STATE” with a drop-down box from which you may select INDIANA. You will have access to additional resources and information about registration and voting deadlines. This website will be frequently updated as new information becomes available. You will have an option to input your address and view a personalized voter guide so you may select the ticket of your choice and view the contested races and candidates.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that does not endorse or promote political parties or candidates. We encourage all voters to be well informed and to be attentive to local races as well as state and national ones. After all, local elections impact the communities in which we live.

We also want to remind citizens that you are eligible to vote if you are a U.S. citizen and a resident of Indiana, will be at least 18 years of age on or before the next general election, are not currently in prison after being convicted of a crime, and have lived in the precinct where you vote for at least 30 days prior to the election.

The most important qualification, however, is the last: To be eligible to vote, you must first be REGISTERED to vote.

You may register online at https://indianavoters.in.gov/, and this link also provides the option to request an absentee ballot to vote by mail. We highly recommend that voters consider this option to reduce the health risk of in-person voting.
