League of Women Voters to celebrate 100 years

HANCOCK COUNTY — The League of Women Voters of Hancock County invites the public to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the League of Women Voters at 2 p.m. Feb. 13 in the council chambers at city hall, 10 S. State St. Mayor Chuck Fewell will present a proclamation in honor of the league’s founding.

The League of Women Voters was founded on Feb. 14, 1920, at the Congress Hotel in Chicago after the United States Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granting women the right to vote after a 70-year struggle. The 19th Amendment was ratified by the states in August 1920.

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization that supports neither political parties nor specific candidates. The league encourages the active and informed participation of citizens in the governmental process. The public is invited to attend and learn more about the LWV of Hancock County, membership opportunities and its upcoming activities.
