GREENFIELD — Nearly 30 children in the AWANA program raced wooden cars down the track in the AWANA Grand Prix on Feb. 1 at Brandywine Community Church.

Each Wednesday, the children gather in age groups at the church for a Bible lesson, games and more. Each year, many of them choose to enter a car in the Grand Prix on a Saturday morning in early February.

Racers compete in their class groupings: Cubbies is for children from 3 years old until just before kindergarten; Sparks is for kindergartners through second-graders, and T&T (Truth and Training) is for third- through sixth-graders. First-, second- and third-place finishers in each age group receive trophies. Trophies are also given for best car design.

The three age-group race winners then face each other to determine the overall champion. Gavin Schnecker of the Sparks group took the top prize.

After the children race, AWANA leaders and parents can enter cars in the adult division. Karen Hummel won the traveling piston trophy.
