The Hancock County Health Department inspects restaurants four times annually and violations are determined as “C” for critical, “NC” for noncritical and “R” for repeated violations. The following inspections are based on information obtained from Retail Food Inspection Reports.

July 17

Needler’s Fresh Market

Location: 5802 W. U.S. Highway 52, New Palestine

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: C/R2 — expired baby formula, must have date mark on all lunch meats once opened, cannot exceed seven days, corrected/discarded; C — salad bar is running warm, chicken is at 45 degrees, sliced pre-packed meat in basket is 55 degrees, basket preventing airflow, service called/discarded; C — knives used must be cleaned and sanitized before being placed in storage, corrected; NC — paper towels needed in butcher area, corrected.

July 18

Penn Station

Location: 1667 N. State St., Greenfield

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: C — hand sink is only for handwashing, do not dump anything into sink, corrected; NC/R2 — water filter unit is dripping onto prep sink area, hand sink with debris is slow to drain, to be corrected by Aug. 1; NC — need sanitizing strips for chemical being used, to be corrected by Aug. 1; NC/R4 — replace cutting boards with discoloration in cut marks, difficult to clean, store in a sanitary manner, to be corrected by Aug. 1.

July 19

Wings, Etc. Grill and Pub

Location: 1925 Melody Lane, Greenfield

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: C/R — unmarked chemical bottle with chemical in bar area, corrected; NC — no paper towels in dispenser by hand sink in bar, corrected; C — need to have someone full time at this store as the certified food handler, to be corrected by Oct. 1; NC — temperature monitor not working on dish machine, provide test strips for sanitizer at dish machine, repair hoses in mop sink, to be corrected by Oct. 1.

July 22

Subway of Fortville

Location: 323 S. Oak St., Fortville

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: C/R2 — hand sink is to be used for handwashing only, not for dirty dishes, corrected; NC/R2 — storage containers for lids, pan inserts and squeeze bottles must be clean to sight and touch, to be corrected by July 24; NC/R2 — repair back door so that it fits tightly with no daylight showing, to be corrected by Sept. 1.

July 23

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store

Location: 2265 Barrett Drive, Greenfield

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: NC/R3 — clean trays which store ice buckets, clean interior of freezer with chicken strips, clean drawer under grill to remove debris/build-up, to be corrected by Oct. 1.

Fairfield Inn

Location: 2253 William Way, Greenfield

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: C — must have employee health policy available and reviewed throughout the year, should date mark gallons of milk when opened for a total of seven days’ use including day opened, utensils for grill should be clean to sight and touch, corrected; NC — sanitizing test strips need to be available at all times, corrected.
