Volleyball

Marauders edge Arabians

Mt. Vernon won a battle of unbeatens on Thursday, falling behind 2-0 against Pendleton Heights before rallying to win three straight sets and the match, 18-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-11, 15-11.

Mt. Vernon improved to 8-0 on the season with the win. Victoria Bulmahn set a new career high with 51 assists. Cecilia Bulmahn and Claire Ertel each had 21 kills. Sophie Schultz had 28 digs, while Victoria Bulmahn addded 19 and Ertel added 16. Olivia Yeley had seven blocks, Victoria Bulmahn had six and Macy Lyon had 4. Cecilia Bulmahn, Schultz and Lillie Perdue each had two aces.

The Marauders are next in action Tuesday at Brownsburg.

Dragons drop Whiteland

New Palestine won its fourth straight match Thursday, beating Whiteland 25-4, 25-5, 25-9.

Sarah Adam had 20 assists and Isabella Gizzi six. Grace Myers led the defense with nine digs.

The Dragons’ offense featured a number of hitters. Rachel Popp had seven kills, Kaelyn Armstrong six kills, Jesi Hall and Kennedy Stephenson five each and Reagan Kleiman four.

The Dragons are now 4-1 on the season. They next play Tuesday at Zionsville.

Dragons fall at home

New Palestine dropped a 5-0 decision Thursday at home against Franklin Central.

The Dragons (0-3-1) next play Tuesday at Mt. Vernon.

Marauders lose to Orioles

Mt. Vernon stayed close with Avon for a half on Thursday, eventually falling to the Orioles, 4-0.

The Marauders trailed just 1-0 at half before the visitors scored three times in the second half to put the game away. Mt. Vernon (1-3) hosts New Palestine on Tuesday.

Dragons roll to win

New Palestine remained unbeaten on the season Thursday with a 4-0 victory over New Castle at Kelso Stadium.

Maddy Miller started the scoring off, taking a pass from Sydney Miller and beating the defense to tally her eighth goal of the season. Moriah Corey then fed Anna Luker a pass that Luker buried into the side netting to put the Dragons up 2-0. Sydney Miller then scored her first career varsity goal, surprising the Trojans with a free kick as they were setting up their defense. Izzy Myers later scored from 20 yards out for her fourth goal of the year.

The Dragons (4-0-1) are next in action Tuesday at Warren Central.

Cougars win HHC game

Greenfield-Central got back in the win column with a 4-2 victory at home against conference foe Yorktown.

The Cougars struck early as Anne Marie DeKeyser found a streaking Sarah Contrarez just two minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. Then just one minute later, Kelsi McLaughlin slotted a through ball to DeKeyser, who rifled the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. Early in the second half, McLaughlin found DeKeyser again behind the defense and the senior captain put it away for a 3-0 lead. DeKeyser scored the hat trick with a calmly struck penalty kick.

The Cougars are now 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in the HHC. They are back in action Wednesday at home against conference rival Pendleton Heights.

Boys tennis

Dragons top Shenandoah

New Palestine posted its third victory in as many days in a 4-1 victory over Shenandoah.

Ben Blachly led the way with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles to improve his record to 5-0. Colin Darley won 7-5, 7-5. At doubles, Jeremy Wagoner/Ethan Haeberle played aggressively and won 6-0, 6-4, while Ezra Schwier/Jackson Havel won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2. Zach Au had a solid match at No. 3 singles, but fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker 1-6, 6-3, 10-4.

The Dragons are now 4-1 on the season. They next play today in the Noblesville Invitational.

Marauders lose for 1st time

Mt. Vernon traveled to Centerville on Thursday, falling to the hosts, 3-2.

Jackson Dunlavy/Dallas Turner won at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-0. Reece Powell won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3 to give Mt. Vernon its final point.

The Marauders (6-1) are next in action Wednesday at Anderson.

Royals top Hauser

Eastern Hancock picked up a win against Hauser on Thursday, 4-1.

Nolan Stout won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Zeke Dixon added a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Brady Smith and John McDaniel won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Sammy Blocher and Bryce Wennen won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

The Royals improved to 2-1 on the season. They host the Mid-Eastern Conference meet today.

Cougars fall to Noblesville

Greenfield-Central lost to a strong Noblesville team on Thursday, 150-186.

Caroline Gibson was again low scorer for the Cougars with a 39. Tandess O’Neal had a 47 and Haley Hoagland a 48. Grace Silcox returned to the varsity scoring with a 52.

Royals break school record

Eastern Hancock had a big night Thursday, topping two conference teams and setting a school record. The Royals shot a 196 to top Wapahani (200) and Shenandoah (207).

Jocelyn Duncan, Daly Pelger and Haleigh Caveletto all shot 48. Shelby Jackson had a 52 and Inez Friddle rounded out the scoring with a 65.

Dragons get road win

New Palestine rallied several times Wednesday night for a road victory over Hamilton Heights 19-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-22.

Jesi Hall had a career-high 22 kills. She also had three blocks and two aces.

Kennedy Stephenson added eight kills and four blocks. Sarah Adam had 36 assists and eight digs, while Grace Myers had 18 digs.

Cougars sweep Richmond

Greenfield-Central swept past Richmond at home on Wednesday, 25-12, 25-10, 25-15.

Ava Antic led the offense with nine kills but Brooke Herrell and Makayla Price trailed closely behind with seven and eight kills respectively. Sophomore setter Morgan Hornaday had 19 assists in the win.

Cross-country

County teams compete in roundup

The New Palestine girls cross-country team had a strong showing Wednesday at the Pendleton Heights Arabian Roundup, finishing third in the 18-team event.

Brenna Shaw led the Dragons, finishing third overall out of 134 runners, posting a 5K time of 19:57.21. Emma Mann was sixth (20:16.30). Kendall Mann finished 19th (21:35.70) to give the Dragons three runners in the top 20. Kaylin Casner was 32nd and Caitlin Urrutia 37th.

The Dragons tallied 94 places, finishing only behind Fishers (35) and Hamilton Southeastern (43). NP was well ahead of three HHC schools taking the next three spots — Pendleton Heights (134), Mt. Vernon (141) and Yorktown (171).

The Dragon boys finished 10th of 21 teams, led by Devon Whitaker’s ninth-place finish. Josh Ackerman was 49th, Connor Lapenta 62nd, Hayden Isaacs 77th and Owen Kleine 86th. The Dragons tallied 283 places. Hamilton Southeastern won the event with 34.

Mt. Vernon tops Arabians

Mt. Vernon squared off with conference foe Pendleton Heights at Hamilton Southeastern on Wednesday, sweeping the singles positions to win 3-2.

At No. 1 singles, Haiden Rose won 6-4, 6-1. Chris Hays won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 and Reece Powell won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Cougars get another win

Greenfield-Central picked up another dual meet victory Wednesday, topping Lawrence North 177-218.

The Cougars were led by Caroline Gibson’s 39. Katie Curry had a personal best of 45 while Tandess O’Neal had a 46 and Haley Hoagland a 47.
