County players earn all-state honors

Five Hancock County girls basketball players were named all-state honorable mention by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association on Wednesday.

New Palestine led the IBCA selections with three players. Seniors Leah Seib and Katie Herron were named Senior All-State Honorable Mention, while junior Jordan Reid received Underclass All-State Honorable Mention.

Joining Reid on the Underclass list were Greenfield-Central junior Hannah Farrell and Mt. Vernon sophomore Lexi Shelton.

Eastern Hancock sets 3 on 3 tourney

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters annual 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament will be conducted March 16 at Eastern Hancock High School.

The tournament has many different divisions, from first grade through open divisions for adults, for both male and female players. There is also B division for high school boys that do not play on a JV or Varsity basketball team.

The entry fee is $60 for early registration. The entry fee increases to $80 after March 11. Online registration will be available at easternhancock3on3.eventbrite.com.

New Palestine grad wins ACC title

Notre Dame’s Samuel Voelz, a 2017 New Palestine graduate, followed up a recent record-setting day with an Athletic Coast Conference championship on Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.

Voelz and the Irish distance medley relay team, which set a school-record time two weeks ago, won the ACC title with a time of 9:38:35, beating the runner-up by more than seven seconds.

Notre Dame’s men finished sixth overall in the ACC meet.

Greenfield youth heading back to nationals

Greenfield sixth-grader Brooklyn McConnell, who attends Maxwell Middle School, is heading back to a national competition to defend her 2018 championship.

McConnell, who won the Jr. NBA Skills Challenge last year at the NBA Draft, won this year’s local and regional competitions to advance to the finals in New York City again. 

She will travel to New York in June to defend her title at this year’s NBA Draft.
