Dragons win invite

New Palestine won six straight sets Saturday to clinch the Greenwood Invitational championship.

The Dragons began the day with a 25-11, 25-15 victory against Scecina. Lydia Jones had nine kills. Kaelyn Armstrong added four kills and 11 digs. Isabel Martens and Lauren Dodd had three kills each. Audrey VanderWal had six digs and Rylie Sturgeon five. Sydney Robertson added 17 assists.

In the second match of pool play, the Dragons won 25-8, 25-12 against Edinburgh. New Palestine served six aces. Sarah Adam had five assists. Kennedy Stephenson had three kills and Kristen Dodd two.

The Dragons won the championship match 25-12, 25-20 against Monrovia. Jones had 16 digs and nine kills. Armstrong added eight digs and four kills. Jesi Hall had five kills. Robertson had a double-double with 10 digs and 18 assists. Sturgeon had eight digs.

The Dragons are now 11-3 on the season.

Cougars drop 2 at home

Greenfield-Central hosted McCutcheon and Lafayette Central Catholic on Saturday, dropping games to both and falling to 12-4 on the season.

The Cougars lost the opener to McCutcheon 24-26, 25-22, 26-28, 17-25. After Lafayette Central Catholic beat McCutcheon 3-1, they bested Greenfield-Central in a five-set thriller.

The hosts fought hard but fell 22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-22, 19-20.

Marauders fall twice

Mt. Vernon dropped two games Saturday, falling to tough opponents in Hamilton Southeastern and Westfield in four sets each.

The Marauders won the first set against the Royals but dropped the next three, falling 25-20, 23-25, 16-25, 26-28. The Shamrocks won the first two sets and Mt. Vernon couldn’t complete the comeback, falling 19-25, 22-25, 25-19, 23-25.

After starting 10-0, Mt. Vernon has now lost three straight against highly-ranked competition and is 10-3 heading into tonight’s match against Greenfield-Central.

Marauders cruise to win

Mt. Vernon outlasted the weather Saturday, defeating Yorktown, 9-1.

Hancock County scoring leader Cleo Mills added four more goals and an assist for the Marauders. Riley Hurst had two goals, Katie Gawrys had a goal an assist, Alexi Hardie added a goal and two assists and Brianna Hale had a goal.

Shay Stindle had two assists, Anna Miller had an assist and Jaici Wright had six saves in the win.
