Cougars shut out Delta

Greenfield-Central won its second straight conference game Wednesday night as they downed Delta 8-0.

The Cougars controlled the tempo of the game early as the offense was able to put away five goals by halftime. The Cougars defense held tough and earned their first shut out of the season allowing one shot on goal.

The four big scorers from the team played a big role again. Anne Marie DeKeyser had three goals and two assists. Kelsi McLaughlin scored two goals. Lucy Brand scored twice and had three assists. Rita Aguye-Cots scored a goal and had an assist for the Cougars.

Marauders finish second

Mt. Vernon competed in a tri-match against Delta and Muncie Central on Wednesday, finishing second behind Muncie Central and topping conference foe Delta.

Ava Hampton was team medalist with a 47. The Marauders record now is 8-5.

Dragons fall by 1 stroke

New Palestine dropped a razor-thin match to Richmond on Wednesday at Hawk’s Tail, falling 186-187.

Annaliese Fox was the medalist with a 38. Izzy Gray added a 48, Megan Diller 49 and Abby Belgin 52.

Tennis

Marauders stay unbeaten

Mt. Vernon continued its strong start to the season with a hard-fought 3-2 win against perennial strong team Lawrence North at home Wednesday night.

Mt. Vernon was led by the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Brayden Browning and Peyton Meadors. They came out fired up and left no doubt, winning 6-0, 6-1. The team’s next point also came from doubles, with Sam Frye and Jackson Dunlavy fighting for a 6-2, 7-5.

After Lawrence North took matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, it all came down to Sam McCarty at No. 3 singles. McCarty won 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the win for the Marauders and move them to 9-0 on the season.

Dragons roll to sweep

New Palestine improved to 8-2 on the season Wednesday with a 5-0 victory against Lawrence Central.

Matthew True had a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Carson Gavin (7-5, 6-4) and Trevor Darley (6-2, 6-4) also swept the singles in straight sets.

Dane Reid/Ben Blachly outplayed their Bears opponents with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Jeremy Wagoner/Ethan Haeberle rallied to win 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2 doubles.

Volleyball

Dragons win in 4 sets

New Palestine used a balanced attack Wednesday in a 25-16, 25-15, 19-25, 25-19 victory against Lutheran.

Lauren Dodd had a huge game at net with 10 kills on 18 attempts with no errors for a .556 hitting percentage. Lydia Jones continued her strong play with 18 kills.

Kaelyn Armstrong had eight kills and eight digs. Jesi Hall added seven kills and two blocks. Isabel Martens had three kills and three blocks.

Defensively, Audrey VanderWal and Rylie Sturgeon had eight digs each.

Royals fall at home

Eastern Hancock lost a home conference match to Wapahani on Wednesday, falling 20-25, 5-25, 11-25.

The Royals are now 5-12 on the season.

Cross-Country

Cougars 3rd at tourney

Greenfield-Central’s boys and girls teams each finished third at Wednesday’s Cougarpalooza.

The girls were led by individual champion Audrey Brinkruff. She was followed by Sarah Muckerheide (5th), Emily Wright (20th), Lindsey Pope (22nd), and Erin Hodnett (44th).

The boys finished 10 points behind winner Roncalli and just three points behind Rushville, behind the strength of three top-five finishes. Conner Kinnaman, Parker Niemeier and Luke Muckerheide finished third through fifth respectively for the Cougars, with Austin Nigh the next highest team finisher at 21st.
