Dragons win 7th straight

New Palestine extended its winning streak to seven matches Saturday, beating South Putnam 5-0.

The match was in the semifinal of the New Palestine Invitational. The Dragons began play in the championship match against Greenwood, but it was halted by rain after most players had finished a set.

At singles, Matthew True won 6-0, 6-1. Carson Gavin won 6-2, 6-4 and Trevor Darley won 6-0, 6-0 against South Putnam. Dane Reid and Ben Blachly won 6-2, 6-0. Jeremy Wagoner and Ethan Haeberle won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2.

The Dragons are now 7-1 on the season.

Boys soccer

Dragons get shutout win

New Palestine scored in the first half and posted a shutout Saturday to beat Yorktown 1-0 in a Hoosier Heritage Conference match.

The Dragons scored on an own goal late in the opening half. The defense and goalkeepers made it stand up.

New Palestine is now 2-4-1 on the season, gaining results in the last two matches.

Girls soccer

Dragons fall to Flashes

Class 2A No. 15 New Palestine dropped a 4-0 decision to Franklin Central Saturday morning.

The Dragons’ record fell to 5-2 after the loss.

Franklin Central took a 2-0 lead in the opening half. While coach Gina Fannin said the Dragons’ play improved in the second half, the Flashes were able to put away two more goals.

Volleyball

Cougars fall in final

Greenfield-Central took part in an invitational at Muncie Burris on Saturday, winning its first three matches before being defeated for the first time this season by the hosts, 25-27, 18-25.

The Cougars had beaten Faifield, Logansport and Evansville Memorial earlier in the day to improve their record to 11-0. Greenfield-Central is now 11-1 on the season.

Royals fall to Lapel

Eastern Hancock lost Saturday to Lapel in three sets, 13-25, 18-25, 21-25.

The Royals are now 4-10 on the season.

Cross-Country

Dragons compete in invite

The New Palestine cross-country teams ran against many of the state’s best athletes Saturday at the Marion Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Both Dragon teams ran in the elite division of one of the state’s biggest meets, which featured 48 girls teams and 56 boys teams running across four divisions. The Dragons raced in the elite division based on their performances in the meet from a year ago.

The Dragon boys placed 12th with 254 places in a 16-team race. North Central (53) won, ahead of Pendleton Heights (119), Carroll (Allen) (121) and Carmel (124).

Drew Austin led the way for the Dragons, finishing 22nd in 16:52.9. Kyler Harrison was 36th (17:07.1), Josh Collins 55th (17:24.4), Caleb Stirm 61st (17:37.4) and Devon Whitaker 102nd (18:21.8).

The Dragon girls placed 13th with 332 places in the 18-team race. Carroll (Allen) won with 49 places, beating Carmel (77) and Noblesville (99).

Brenna Shaw led the Dragons with a 48th-place finish (20:32.8). Emily Adam placed 55th (20:41.6). Haley Rickey was 75th (21:10.3), Kaylin Casner 92nd (21:35.4) and Kendall Mann 98th (21:48.4).

Marauders finish in top 10

Mt. Vernon’s boys and girls teams competed in Saturday’s Manchester XC Invite, with the boys finishing third and the girls finishing ninth out of more than 20 teams in each race.

The boys team was led by Ryan Strantz, who finished 26th in 18:06.0. Marco Ramirez finished 31st in 18:27.1, with Evan Rappe right behind in 32nd place in 18:28.5.

The girls team was led by Rilee Hartman, who finished 22nd in 21:55.4. Following Hartman were Lydia Carrell in 24th place, with a time of 22:00.1, and Esther Parham in 37th place, with a time of 22:41.7.

Cougars place 7th, 12th

Greenfield-Central competed at the Columbus North Classic Saturday morning, with the boys finished seventh and the girls finishing in 12th place.

The boys were led by Parker Niemeier, who finished 20th with a time of 16:50.3. Conner Kinnaman followed right behind in 21st, with a time of 16:56.1. Luke Muckerheide was 44th, in 17:34.7.

The Cougars were led by sophomore Audrey Brinkuff placing 8th in the large school division (10th overall) in a personal best time of 19:33.4. Brinkruff was followed to the line by senior Sarah Muckerheide (63rd), freshman Emily Wright (92nd), senior Lindsey Pope (110th), and sophomore Erin Hodnett (118th).
