Boys soccer

Dragons rally for draw

New Palestine found itself in a three-goal deficit Thursday, but Matt Kelley’s long-range blast with 10 seconds left gave the Dragons a 3-3 draw against Tech.

In the final 25 minutes, the Dragons clawed back. Colby Sharp scored twice to draw New Palestine within one, setting the stage for the late-game heroics. Sharp’s first goal came off an assist from Josh Smith. The second came from a free kick. Kelley hit a 40-yarder over the keeper and into the net to give the Dragons the draw.

The Dragons are now 1-4-1 on the season.

Dragons get victory

Class 2A No. 15 New Palestine inaugurated the soccer pitch at Shepler Field Thursday, playing its first home game on the artificial turf surface against 2A No. 20 Yorktown.

The Dragons did so in style, beating HHC rival Yorktown 5-3 in a high-scoring contest.

Maddy Miller scored twice. Emmy Giddens added a goal and an assist, Grace Voelz and Victoria Crowder also scored for the Dragons.

The Dragons are now 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in HHC play.

Marauders beat New Castle

Mt. Vernon defeated New Castle 6-0 on Thursday to improve to 8-0 on the year.

Rylie Pearson had two goals and an assist, Anna Miller had two goals, Brianna Linton scored a goal, Alexi Hardie had a goal and an assist, and Riley Hurst and Shay Stindle each added an assist.

Jaici Wright and Alex Overshiner combined for the shutout.

Dragons keep streak going

New Palestine kept its winning streak alive Thursday, beating Lawrence Central 181-232.

Annaliese Fox was the match medalist, shooting a 38. Freshman Michaela Purnell shot a personal-best 45 to help lead the Dragons. Izzy Gray shot 46 and Megan Diller 52.

The Dragons are now 5-1 in dual and triangular matches.

Marauders stay unbeaten

Mt. Vernon traveled to face conference foe Yorktown on Thursday and came away with a convincing 4-1 win, improving its record to 7-0 on the year and 2-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

Winners for the Marauders were J.D. Cohee at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1; Chris Hays at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4; Sam McCarty at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1; and the No. 2 doubles team of Sam Frye and Jackson Dunlavy, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Cougars top Morristown

Greenfield-Central won on the road Thursday night against Morristown, 4-1.

The Cougars were fired up for a win after losing a close match to Lawrence Central the night before and did not hold back. First off the courts were No. 1 doubles duo Seth Kirkpatrick and Sam Galyean. The pair quickly won 6-1, 6-0.

Kane Bradley won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Mason Bussel won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The Cougars one loss came from No. 1 singles Collin Hunt, who lost in a third-set tiebreaker.

The team is now 4-3.

Dragons win sixth straight

New Palestinewon its sixth straight match Thursday, beating Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Shelbyville 3-2.

The Dragons are now 6-1 this season and 3-1 in HHC play.

Matthew True and Carson Gavin both outplayed their Golden Bear foes and won 6-0, 6-0. Trevor Darley’s 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 clinched the match.

The Dragon doubles teams had a tougher night. Dane Reid and Ben Blachly dropped a tight three-setter 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1. Jeremy Wagoner/Drew Pieratt fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.

Volleyball

Marauders move to 10-0

Mt. Vernon won a big home conference match Thursday, topping Delta in four sets, 25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18.

Cecilia Bulmahn had 14 kills and 17 digs. Claire Ertel had 11 kills and 16 digs. Rachel Pilkington had 10 kills, three aces and three blocks. Victoria Bulmahn added eight kills, seven blocks, 12 digs and 36 assists, and Sophie Schultz added 24 digs for the Marauders.

Royals drop road match

Eastern Hancock traveled to Blue River Valley on Thursday, falling in four sets, 21-25, 25-19, 17-25, 24-26.

The Royals are now 4-9 on the year and 0-2 in the Mid-Eastern Conference.
