Dragons win tri match, Cougars finish 2nd

New Palestine improved to 4-1 in dual and triangular matches Monday with a sweep at Hawk’s Tail against Greenfield-Central and Franklin Central.

The Dragons shot 195, Greenfield-Central a 207 and Franklin Central a 229.

For the Dragons, Annaliese Fox was medalist with a 37. Izzy Gray shot 46, Megan Diller 55 and Rachel Purnell 57. Michaela Purnell shot 58 and Abby Begin added a 59.

The Cougars were led by Caroline Gibson’s 45 and Haley Hoagland’s 51. Rose Gerard and Tandess O Neal finished the scoring with a 55 and 56.

Marauders continue winning ways

Mt. Vernon improved to 7-0 on the season with a 190 to 224 win Monday against Alexandria. Freshman Meredith Johnson and Alaina Nugent was co-medalist with a 43.

Senior Lily Hampton had a birdie on hole 6 for the Marauders, who only played with four golfers due to illnesses and injuries.

Tennis

Marauders push past Pendleton

Mt. Vernon took to the road to face conference foe Pendleton Heights on Monday, coming away with a 4-1 win.

The No. 2 doubles team of Sam Frye/Jackson Dunlavy got the ball rolling with a 6-3, 6-0 win. No. 3 singles Sam McCarty won 6-4, 6-3.

No. 2 singles player Reece Powell lost 4-6, 4-6. The Marauders led 2-1 and it came down to two three-set matches.

The No. 1 doubles team of Peyton Meadors and Braeden Browning won 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 to give Mt. Vernon the win. No. 1 singles player JD Cohee also won, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to close out the 4-1 win.

Cougar earn road win

Greenfield-Central traveled to Rushville on Monday and came home with a 3-2 victory.

No. 2 doubles duo Kane Bradley and Robbie Dye earned the first point for the Cougars, winning 6-1, 6-1. No. 1 singles player Mason Bussel was off the courts next after winning 6-3, 6-1.

Rushville answered back and tied the match 2-2 after winning both No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The final point would come down to the No. 1 doubles team of Collin Hunt and Seth Kirkpatrick, who won 6-3, 7-5.

Dragons swept by Delta

New Palestine dropped its season opener Monday 5-0 at home to conference rival Delta.

The Dragons dropped all five matches in straight sets but had a number of strong performances. At No. 1 singles, Matthew True dropped a first-set tiebreaker to Tannon Dishman before falling 7-6(3), 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Carson Gavin fell 6-4, 6-3 to Delta senior Ben Bamidele. At No. 1 doubles, Dane Reid and Ben Blachly dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 decision.

Ethan Haeberle at No. 3 singles and the No. 2 doubles pairing of Trevor Darley/Jeremy Wagoner also both fell in straight sets.

Volleyball

Royals drop 5-set match

Eastern Hancock looked to get back on track with a home conference match against Wes-Del on Monday, but dropped a tough five-set match to the visitors.

The Royals won the first two sets before losing three straight to the Warriors. Final set scores were 25-16, 25-22, 17-25, 20-25, 15-17.
