Marauders get past Lawrence Central

Mt. Vernon scored early and used a big fourth inning to pull away, outlasting Lawrence Central 9-4 on Wednesday.

All 10 Marauders that came to the plate managed at least one hit, as the team compiled 14 in the win while allowing just four. Thomas Obergfell led the way with a 3 for 4 day, while Dylan Cole and Bradley Turner each had home runs and two hits.

Payton Bovard, A.J. Swingle and Hunter Davis each pitched several innings, combining to strike out eight and allow three earned runs.

Tennis

Dragons top conference foe Cougars

New Palestine fought back in several match against the visiting Greenfield-Central Cougars on Wednesday, picking up a 4-1 win in a Hoosier Heritage conference clash.

The Dragons trailed in four matches in the early stages, but recovered well to fight back and secure victory for the home team.

At No. 1 singles for the Dragons, sophomore Megan Long lost the first set against Cougars senior Lindsey McCord but fought back to win in three tough sets 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. 

At No. 2 singles, Dragons senior Ivey Simmons was beaten by Cougars sophomore Avery Spencer 6-3, 6-1.

Junior Caylie Almond secured a win for the the Dragons at No. 3 singles when she rallied to defeat Greenfield-Central sophomore Grace Hall 6-4, 6-4.

The Dragons’ No. 1 doubles team of juniors Josee King and Claire Cherry topped Cougars senior Haidyn Goodwin and junior Kaleigh Stephenson 6-2, 6-4.

The Dragons No. 2 doubles pairing of junior Sheridan Schrowe and sophomore Ashley Truman won a 3 set victory against Cougars juniors Erin Wright and Aly Proper 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Mt. Vernon keeps rolling with win

Mt. Vernon, now ranked No. 28 in the state, traveled to New Castle on Wednesday and came away with a 4-1 win.

The Marauders got wins at all three singles positions, with No. 1 Alaina Nelson winning 6-2, 6-0, and No. 2 Lydia Ruegsegger and No. 3 Kaleigh Helm each won 6-0, 6-0.

Mt. Vernon’s top doubles pairing of Olivia Spicer and Sophie Williams picked up the other victory, 6-2, 6-1.

“We improved to 14-2 on the year,” Marauders coach Gabe Muterspaugh said. “We finished second at 6-1 in the conference and lost 3-2 to No. 15 Franklin Central and No. 12 Delta. We have had a fantastic year and are not done yet.”

Royals drop match to Raiders

Eastern Hancock hosted Shenandoah on Wednesday, falling to the visitors 4-1.

The Royals win came at No. 1 singles, where Chelsi McMahan cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win. 

At No. 3 singles, Valentina Brooks put up a hard-fought match, eventually falling 2-6, 7-5, 6-6 (7-5).

Golf

Marauders top county rival Cougars

Mt. Vernon took on county foe Greenfield-Central on Wednesday at Hawk’s Tail, with the Marauders picking up a 161-178 win.

Freshman Sam McWilliams took medalist honors again with an even par round of 36. Xavier Dunham followed with a 39, John Husar shot a 42, Max Heitman a 44 and Haiden Rose a 44 for the Marauders.

Dragons finish 2nd in triangular meet

New Palestine golf team was second in a triangular meet Wednesday at Bear Chase in Shelbyville.

The Dragons shot 191, second to Columbus North’s 181. Shelbyville shot 195.

Matt Kelley led the Dragons with a 45. Peyton Miller added a 47, A.J. Williams 49 and Cameron Rooks 50.
