Eastern Hancock outlasted Class 2A No. 3 Wapahani in nine innings Thursday, winning a pitchers’ duel 1-0.

Two Royals pitchers combined to throw a shutout. A.J. Muegge started the game for Eastern Hancock, going eight innings and allowing zero runs on two hits and striking out four.

Addison True earned the victory on the mound after pitching one inning and allowing no runs on no hits.

Muegge went 2 for 4 at the plate to lead Royals in hits. His leadoff single in the ninth inning led to scoring the winning run, as an Easton Fields sacrifice advanced Muegge to second base with one out and a groundout from True put Muegge on third.

Andrew Knoblock then singled to right, scoring Muegge and giving the Royals the win. 

Marauders roll to shutout win

Mt. Vernon scored early and often Thursday, cruising to a 16-0 win against Muncie Central.

On the mound, the Marauders were led by Eli Clotfelter and Payton Bovard, who struck out five and allowed five hits in the shutout.

Jaden Cappelletti led the offense, going 3 for 3 with three RBIs, a triple and a home run. Sam McCarty, Jake Stank, Jake Stadler and Matthew Boyle each had two hits. Max Newlin, Stank, Stadler and Boyle each added two RBIs for the Marauders.

Softball

Marauders get conference win

After falling behind a run in the first inning, the Mt. Vernon offense erupted on Thursday, scoring six runs in the second and adding seven between the fourth and fifth inning in earning a 13-3 run-rule win against Pendleton Heights.

Kaitlyn Nugent led the Marauders with two home runs and five RBIs. Morgan Scruggs went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and Sydnee Perry and Sammi Bennett each had two hits. Cassidy Parker and Riley Hasseld each had two RBIs. 

On the mound, Karlee Franklin got the win, pitching five innings and striking out three while allowing the three runs.

Tennis

Cougars win at Frankton

Greenfield-Central traveled to Frankton on Thursday and came away with a 4-1 victory.

Avery Spencer won 6-2, 6-0 and Grace Hall won 6-2, 6-1 in singles spots for the Cougars. The Cougars final two points came from doubles. Both doubles teams for the Cougars were able to grind out some key points that allowed them to win their matches.

Sophomore Grace Silcox stepped in to fill in for a sick Lindsey McCord. Silcox would end up losing, but took three games off her opponent in her first varsity match. 

Dragons win at Morristown

New Palestine won 4-1 at Morristown on Thursday.

Ivey Simmons played at No. 1 singles for the Dragons for the first time this season and lost narrowly to Yellow Jackets junior McKenzie Logan 7-6 (7), 6-1.

Sophomore Megan Long won at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Nicole Wernimont made her varsity debut for the Dragons at No. 3 singles and won a close three-setter 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.

No. 1 doubles team of juniors Josee King and Claire Cherry combined well to wub 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, sophomores Ashley Truman and Briette Basaran cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win.

Golf

Royals drop match to Morristown

Eastern Hancock took on Morristown on Thursday at Bear Chase Golf Course in Morristown, falling 199-210.

The Royals are now 2-3 in head-to-head matches this year.

Dragons win at Warren Central

New Palestine won Thursday at Warren Central, posting a 185-201 victory.

Nic Mohr and Matt Kelley were co-medalists with 44s. Cameron Rooks shot 48. Zach Hoyt and Peyton Miller each shot 49.
