Retail Food Inspection

The Hancock County Health Department inspects restaurants four times annually, and violations are labeled “C” for critical, “NC” for noncritical and “R” for repeated violations. The following inspections are based on information obtained from Retail Food Inspection Reports.

June 1

El 5 De Mayo

Location: 209 S. Main St., Fortville

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: C – no illness reporting policy, corrected; NC – food needs to be covered in coolers, corrected; NC – no paper towels at hand sink, corrected; NC/R – repair wall and coving in kitchen, to be corrected by Sept. 1; NC – exhaust hood needs to be cleaned so it does not drip, to be corrected by Sept. 1; NC/R – ice scoop handle in ice, corrected; NC/R – light rods need to be replaced where they are not working, to be corrected by Sept. 1’ NC – dish machine needs to reach 120 degrees in wash cycle, to be corrected by Sept. 1; NC – need to clean under grill/fryers, prep table and two tall refrigeration units, also legs/wheels of equipment, to be corrected by Sept. 1.

Pizza King

Location: 215 W. Broadway, Fortville

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: NC – need to have 70 foot-candles of light in dish washing and food prep areas, to be corrected by Sept. 1.

June 3

Papa Murphy’s Take N Bake

Location: 188 E. New Road, Greenfield

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: None

Casey’s General Store

Location: 1133 E. Main St., Greenfield

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: C – lunch meat not date marked when package opened, pepperoni not date marked in consistent manner as other products, corrected; C –need to wash hands and reglove before handling food after handling drawers, paper, etc., corrected; NC – garnishes for sandwiches – tomato, lettuce, pickles, etc. – need to be protected from contamination, need to package or cover in some manner, to be corrected in 30 days; NC – need thermometer for customer self-service cooler, to be corrected by Sept. 1; need sanitizer strips, to be corrected by June 13.

Ben’s Soft Pretzels

Location: 1965 N. State St., Greenfield

Type of Inspection: Routine

Violations found: NC – no paper towels at hand sink, corrected as soon as possible; C – pretzel dogs need to be held at 135 degrees or log system of time in/time out, corrected; NC/R – provide food thermometers, to be corrected by Oct. 1.
