FORTVILLE — The Mt. Vernon girls soccer team continued it dominance over its Hoosier Heritage Conference opponents on Tuesday night.

The host Marauders came out firing against HHC foe Shelbyville, posting eight first-half goals and adding four more in the final 40 minutes en route to a lopsided 12-0 victory.

Tuesday’s win improved Mt. Vernon’s season record to 4-1 and 2-0 in the HHC. Mt. Vernon finished 7-0 during league play in 2019 to win the outright HHC title. This season, the Marauders have won four straight games, including a 4-0 win over HHC rival Greenfield-Central last week.

Against Shelbyville, the Marauders received a hat-trick performance from Anna Miller. Shay Shipley added two goals and an assist.

Anna Isger had two goals and two assists. Katie Gawrys finished with one goal, while Rylie Pearson recorded one goal and an assist.

Shay Stindle, Mariam Konate and Macy Wilson also had one goal apiece. Addison Lockwood and Ava Garza each had one assist. Riley Britt recorded the shutout victory with one save in goal.

Cougars win HHC opener

The Greenfield-Central Cougars traveled to Pendleton Heights on Tuesday night for their first conference game of the season and they played spoiler on the Arabians’ senior night.

The Cougars scored one goal in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second to shutout the Arabians 2-0.

The victory secured G-C’s first win of the year and first in the Hoosier Heritage Conference this season.

In the 34th minute, G-C’s Jackson Findley dribbled to the end line and blasted a shot past Pendleton’s keeper to put the Cougars up 1-0.

In the second half, Derek Owen played a through ball and Jackson Findley once again beat the keeper to make it 2-0.

The Cougars are now 1-4-1 this season and 1-0 in the HHC.

Boys Tennis

Cougars fall to Delta

The Greenfield-Central Cougars lost 0-5 to a tough state-ranked Delta team Tuesday night.

Delta took the 5-0 win, but not without the Cougars making them earn the victory. The highlights for the Cougars came from Robbie Dye at two singles and Garrett Neumeister and Nick Grandstaff at two doubles.

Dye was able to win 7-5 in his second set to force a third and the doubles pair of Grandstaff and Neumeister were able to win their first set 6-3.

Dye lost 3-6, 7-5, 4-6. Grandstaff and Neumeister fell 6-3, 3-6, 3-6.

The Cougars are now 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in the HHC.

Volleyball

Dragons down East Central

The New Palestine volleyball team won 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 20-25, 25-15) on Tuesday night at home against East Central.

Kaelyn Armstrong set a career high with 18 kills and added nine digs. Jesi Hall had 13 kills. Sarah Adam dished out 34 assists. Grace Myers recorded 24 digs. Trinity Oertel added nine digs.

“Great team win for us tonight,” Dragons coach Kelli Gabehart said. “Every set was close and we found a way to win.”

New Palestine is now 3-1 on the season.

Marauders topple No. 9 Bulldogs

The Class 4A Mt. Vernon Marauders celebrated senior night with a 3-1 victory over No. 9 Brownsburg on Tuesday.

Mt. Vernon won the first and second sets 25-23, 25-15, respectively, before falling 25-17 in the third. In the fourth set, Mt. Vernon dug deep to cement the match victory 33-31.

Cecilia Bulmahn had a strong night with 30 kills on 64 swings. Senior Claire Ertel had 14 kills, and senior Olivia Yeley added eight kills and three blocks.

The Marauders are now 6-1 overall with key wins against Cathedral, Noblesville, HHC foe Pendleton Heights, Greenwood and Hamilton Heights.
