Boys track and field roundup: Ryba clears 7-feet, leads state, third in nation

Greenfield-Central senior high jumper Elliot Ryba broke his own school record by clearing 7-feet at the 100th Kokomo Relays Saturday.

Ryba is ranked No. 1 in the state and tied for No. 3 in the nation.

Both Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central had impressive performances in the long-running event, placing second and third, respectively.

Center Grove won the nine-team event with 137.5 points. Mt. Vernon had 89.5 and Greenfield-Central scored 82.

Along with Ryba winning the high jump, Greenfield-Central’s Chris Ross was first to cross the finish line in the 3200-meter run (9:43.20).

Mt. Vernon’s lone win came in the long jump. Chris Edmonds was first with a leap of 22-feet, 5-inches.

Both teams will run at Mt. Vernon High School Wednesday in the Hancock County Meet, scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

Dragons 8th at Zionsville

New Palestine’s boys track and field team finished eighth at the 10-team Zionsville Invitational Friday.

Brownsburg won with 133.5 points. Avon was second with 124. The Dragons scored 31.

New Pal had a pair of second-place finishes.

Jake Cooper was runner-up in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.51. The 4×400 relay team of Charlie Rigsbee, Eli Wasson, Cooper and David Pack placed second in 3:27.91.

The Dragons will compete next at the Hancock County Meet, 5 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Vernon High School.

Royals finish a close 2nd

Eastern Hancock won three events and placed second at Thursday’s Eastern Hancock Invitational.

It was a close 7-team meet with Herron winning with a score of 118. The Royals scored 116 and Hagerstown had 109.

Preston Markley won the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:30.31. Brandon Metz was first in the 3200 at 10:17.89.

The 4×800 relay group of Metz, Aaron Redmon, Markley and Noah Wheeler won in 8:54.89.

Eastern Hancock’s next competition is the Hancock County Meet to be held at Mt. Vernon High School Wednesday starting at 5 p.m.
