Wise, Helgason earn ICGSA All-State honors

Greenfield-Central seniors Madison Wise and Katie Helgason were both honored by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association on Thursday.

Wise, an Iowa State recruit, was named ICGSA First-Team All-State, while Helgason, a Ball State recruit, earned a spot on the ICGSA All-State Second Team.

Wise was named a 2017 Indiana All-Star and is one of three finalists for this year’s Indiana Miss Basketball award, which will be announced later this month.

IHSAA reclassification impacts local schools

The IHSAA announced its new classifications for member schools Wednesday in six team sports for the next two school years.

In football, the Greenfield-Central Cougars will move up and join the New Palestine Dragons, who will remain at Class 5A.

In volleyball, New Palestine will jump from 3A to 4A, while the Dragons’ boys basketball team will go up to 4A, beginning in 2017-18.

In boys soccer, Greenfield-Central, New Palestine and Mt. Vernon will all compete in the newly established 3A. In girls soccer, Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon are in 3A, while New Palestine will play in 2A.

Classifications for baseball and softball will be released in the near future.

Hoops tourney set at Greenfield-Central

A 3-on-3 round-robin basketball tournament will be conducted at the Greenfield-Central High School Fieldhouse on April 8.

The tournament is open to all hoopsters between seventh and 12th grades. There also is a parent, teacher and coach division.

The event runs from 2 to 10 p.m., with proceeds going to support the Greenfield-Central football program.

The cost to participate is $60 per team with dunk and 3-point contests also being conducted at $10 per person per event.

Registration will take place at the fieldhouse at 1 p.m. April 8.

Royals seeking new girls basketball coach

Eastern Hancock High Scholl is accepting résumés for its varsity head girls basketball coaching position.

Interested candidates should send a letter of interest and résumé to Eastern Hancock athletics director Aaron Spaulding at [email protected].

Cougars’ Physical Night set for Medical Center

Greenfield-Central’s Athletic Physical Night will take place Wednesday at Parkway Medical Center (behind Hancock Regional Hospital) in the Anderson Family Practice office.

Changes for this year’s event include: 1. There are only six providers participating and only 91 spots available; 2. They will be giving sports physicals only and the fee will be $48 per student-athlete; 3. A parent/guardian must be present with the IHSAA form filled out and in hand.
