The Mt. Vernon girls tennis team picked up three straight victories to win Saturday’s North Montgomery Invitational.
The Marauders scored wins against Covington (5-0), North Montgomery (3-2) and Danville (5-0) to win the invite.
Mt. Vernon also defeated New Palestine 5-0 on Monday night in Fortville. Cassie York (6-0, 7-5), Sarah Jones (6-3, 6-1) and Alaina Nelson (6-0, 6-0) scored singles victories, while Addison Eads/Emily Annakin (6-3, 6-2) and Brianna Partin/Kendra Eberhard (6-0, 6-1) earned doubles wins.
The Dragons dropped a 3-2 decision to Shelbyville on Friday afternoon. Winners for the Dragons were Amelia Fleetwood at No. 2 singles and Katie Settergren at No. 3 singles.
The Marauders (12-3) get back on the courts today, when they host Delta and Center Grove in a three-way meet.
2 matches washed out
Hancock County tennis matches Greenfield-Central at Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Yorktown and Lapel at Eastern Hancock were rained out Monday night. No makeup dates have been scheduled.
Both county teams are scheduled to take the courts today. Pendleton Heights will pay the Cougars a visit, while the Royals will host Waldron.

Marauders split games
The Marauders picked up a 6-4 win against Westfield (10-9) on Friday before a late rally Saturday morning came up short in a 5-4 loss versus Hamilton Heights.
Friday, the visiting Mt. Vernon offense collected nine hits, including two each from Lauren Montgomery and Sadie Baugh. Montgomery knocked in a pair, while fellow junior Morgan Moss collected three RBIs in the victory. Jessica Flood scored three runs.
Kaitlyn Nugent and Victoria Whyde combined to lead Mt. Vernon in the pitcher’s circle. They each tossed three-plus innings and allowed just one earned run total.
Saturday, the host Marauders scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull the game within one but could not complete the comeback against Hamilton Heights (9-7).
Moss, Baugh and Montgomery all homered in the loss. Moss also collected three hits, while Baugh, Montgomery and Makenzie Gee each had two.
Mt. Vernon (8-8) takes on Class 2A No. 7 Shenandoah (11-5) at home tonight.
Royals pick up victory
Peyton Neilser pitched her second consecutive complete game to lead Eastern Hancock to a 2-1 win against Lapel on Saturday.
Neisler worked all seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing one unearned run. She struck out one and walked two.
Savannah Patterson led the way for the Royals on offense, going 2-for-2 with her second home run of the season. She collected both Royals’ RBIs.
Eastern Hancock’s contest at Class 2A No. 7 Shenandoah was rained out Monday. No makeup date has been announced.
The Royals (13-4, 4-1 Mid-Hoosier Conference) are scheduled to host MHC rival Waldron tonight.
Cougars sweep weekend
During the weekend, the Class 4A No. 12 Cougars (17-3) cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Batesville, winning the opener 7-0 and the second game 4-1.
Darcie Huber struck out 11 Bulldogs (4-13) in Game 1 en route to a complete game shutout. She did not walk a batter and conceded just three hits.
Huber also delivered at the plate, connecting on a pair of hits and two RBIs. Briana Whitaker, Codey Miller and Morganne Denny each picked up two hits, as well. Erika Knapp slapped a double and drove in two.
In Game 2, freshman Sydney Williams championed the Cougars’ offense with a couple of hits and two RBIs.
On the mound, Michaela Ballman went the distance, allowing one earned run on four hits, while striking out a career-high 10.
BASEball
Cougars top Delta twice
The Cougars evened their league record at 5-5 with two of wins vs. Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Delta on Saturday.
Greenfield-Central survived a slugfest to triumph in the opener 10-7, then watched Drey Jameson deal a gem to lead the Cougars to a 12-2 Game 2 victory.
Seth Adams earned the win in the Game 1, as he struck out seven Eagles (9-12, 2-10 HHC). He also added a home run to match the one hit by Slater Rush. Drey Jameson, Tyler Farrell, and Dallas Pribble were 3-for-3.
In the second game, Jameson struck out seven in a complete game win. He helped himself on offense by hitting a home run.
Greenfield-Central (8-12, 5-5 HHC) hosted Lebanon (9-7) Monday night.
Royals game washed out
The Royals pursuit of win No. 11 will have to wait until Wednesday after Monday’s tilt against Liberty Christian was canceled because of rain.
Eastern Hancock (10-8, 4-2 Mid Hoosier Conference) hosts league foe South Decatur (3-11, 2-2 MHC) on Wednesday.
TRACK AND FIELD
Cougars host invite
The Hancock County champion Greenfield-Central girls track and field team picked up where it left off on Wednesday with Friday’s Cougar Chase Invitational championship
Female Athlete of the Meet Maddie Wise led the Cougars to a score of 147 points. Greenwood was runner-up (135 points), followed by Franklin (127.5), Connersville (104), Rushville (65.5), Frankton (39) and Danville (34).
Wise won the 300-meter hurdles in a meet record of time of 47.92. She also won the long jump. Greenfield-Central broke more records, as Savannah Girolami’s 26.17 in the 200, Sydney Cook’s 2:25.89 in the 800 and the 4×400 relay team (Amanda Flora, Cook, Gottwald, Girolami) were new meet milestones.
Regan Lewis also won the high jump.
On the boys’ side, the Cougars came in second. They finished with 142 points behind, Franklin (173). Danville finished third with 103 points, followed by Greenwood (100), Connersville (75), Rushville (48), Frankton (12) and Irvington Prep (0).
Champions for the Cougars were Austin Herald (100 and 200), Michael Sosnowski (400), Jason LaFord (800), Zach Bishop (3,200) and Zach Phillips (discus). The 4×400 relay team (Sosnowski, LaFord, Syrus Fletcher, Tommy Hembree) also won.
The boys run again Thursday at the HHC Championship, while the girls compete in the HHC meet tonight.
