Randall Lee Simon, 41, Indianapolis

HANCOCK COUNTY — An Indianapolis man is facing felony drug crimes after he was arrested and charged from an incident where officials found the presence of fentanyl in late April.

According to court records, Randall Lee Simon, 41, 12000 block of Falling Leaves Trail, has been charged with a Level 2 felony count of dealing cocaine, a Level 2 felony count of dealing in a narcotic drug, a Level 4 felony count of possession of cocaine, a Level 4 felony count of possession of a narcotic drug, and a Class B misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana on April 27.

Simon made his initial appearance in Hancock County Circuit Court Friday, May 3. Judge Scott Sirk set a surety bond of $50,000, despite objections from the prosecutor’s office who suggested a $50,000 cash bond be put in place. The defense requested the surety bond which Sirk agreed to. Simon has since bonded out of the county jail. A trial has been set for Tuesday, Oct. 15.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an officer with the Greenfield Police Department was doing a normal patrol on W. McKenzie Road when the officer observed a blue Dodge Challenger with a temporary license plate that was expired.

The report states the officer did a routine traffic stop, approached the vehicle from the passenger side and immediately smelled the odor of marijuana. Simon told the officer there was nothing in the vehicle but he had smoked recently so the officer decided to conduct a vehicle search.

Simon told officials he was coming from “the club” and that he lived in an apartment in Greenfield, the affidavit said.

A search of the vehicle revealed marijuana, the report stated, and a black and gray small bag behind the passenger’s seat of the vehicle. In the bag, officials located a large amount of plant-like material, accompanied with a digital scale and a large amount of individual baggies.

As the search of the vehicle continued, a pistol was located in the back pocket of the passenger-side seat of the vehicle within arm’s reach of the driver, along with a bag containing the plant-like material and a scale.

Two orange pill bottles were also located in the sunglasses compartment above the rear-view mirror. One of the pill bottles were opened and inside officials noted there were three separately wrapped plastic baggies, two of which appeared to be a white, powdery substance. The third plastic baggie contained what appeared to be a powdery, rock-type substance that field-tested positive for cocaine, the affidavit stated.

Simon was searched by jail staff, officials noted, and found a small, tied-off plastic baggie containing what appeared to be a partially crushed blue, tablet-like substance and powder found in the small front pocket of his jeans, the report stated.

The report stated that the blue tablets located inside one of the orange pill bottles field-tested positive for the presence of fentanyl, and there were approximately 99 tablets located. The plastic baggies found in one of the orange pill bottles containing white, powder-like substance and powder rock-like substance all field tested positive for cocaine.
