NP, MV school boards earn awards

HANCOCK COUNTY – The school boards of New Palestine Community Schools and Mt. Vernon Community Schools both recently received Exemplary Governance Awards.

The awards were given by the Indiana School Boards Association for the 2023 calendar year for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to professional learning and student success, according to a press release.

Board awards are based on points earned by each member for attending ISBA seminars, workshops, conferences, and other learning events, as well as the board’s completion of certain additional criteria, such as a retreat with an outside facilitator and goal setting to elevate student achievement outcomes.

This year, 105 school boards are receiving awards through the EGA program. The New Palestine board received the level 2 advanced award, according to the ISBA website, while Mt. Vernon board received a level 1 commendable award. MV board member Phil Edwards also received an individual commendable award, based on earning points through ISBA events and activities.

MV enrollment applications opening

FORTVILLE – Mt. Vernon schools are opening a window of time in which families that are out of district but would like to transfer to the corporation may apply.

While the first window was in April, the second window opens May 3-13. Parents and guardians will need to complete a separate application for each student who currently lives outside of the school district, or who anticipates moving out of the district before the 2024-25 school year begins. By completing an application, students are entered into a pool and requesting to attend the schools. It does not guarantee enrollment, but priority will be given to current out-of-district and transfer students, their siblings and employees’ children. All applicants will receive notice by May 31.
