Weekend Track and Field Roundup: MV boys tie for first, girls place second

Mt. Vernon won four relay races and Cooper Hunziker finished first in the 1600-meter run at the Marion Relays Saturday.

Mt. Vernon and Homestead tied for first place with 119 points each. Muncie Central was third with 70 and Yorktown placed fourth with 67. There were eight teams in the event.

Hunziker won the 1-mile run in 4-minutes, 29.22 seconds.

Chris Edmonds, Marcus Mellentine, Wil Jones and Sebastian Sprague won the 4×100 relay (no time available). Sprague, Jones, Caden Cassada and Andres Langston were first in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:23.25.

Mellentine, Charlie Cole, Jones and Langston won the sprint medley relay in 1:34.41.

Mt. Vernon won the distance medley relay (10:43.69) with Ahmed Saleh, Cole, Isaiah Njau, and Xaiden Jenson.

The Marauders return to the track Monday at Fishers.

Marauder girls place second

Mt. Vernon’s girls track and field team finished second at Saturday’s Marion Relays.

Homestead won with 156 points. Mt. Vernon scored 92.5. Huntington North was third (73.5) and South Bend Adams (58.5) placed fourth. There were nine teams in the event.

Mt. Vernon had two champions. Ayana Moore won the shot put with a distance of 35-feet, 1.5-inches. Marissa Miner, Ani’ya Williams, Londyn Floyd and Molly Worth won the 4×100-meter relay in 50.52 seconds.

The Marauders had two runner-up finishes.

In the sprint medley relay, Aya Renforth, Floyd, Williams and Madeline Wilson clocked in at 1-minute, 56.54 seconds. In the 4×400-meter relay, Miner, Wilson, Brooklyn Harris and Worth finished in 4:16.89.

Mt. Vernon is back in action Wednesday at the Noblesville Invitational (5:30 p.m.).
