Weekend roundup: Rhodes dominant in G-C’s completion of HHC sweep

Parker Rhodes was dominant on the mound and Greenfield-Central’s offense had 14 hits in a 10-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference victory over New Castle Saturday at Molinder Field.

The win completed a two-game HHC series sweep over the Trojans.

In a five-inning game due to the 10-run mercy rule, Rhodes (1-1) gave up just two hits and struck out 13.

Offensively, Kirk Knecht had four hits, stole two bases, scored twice, and drove in three.

Zander Cobb, Dylan Luther, Shaun McFall and Kyle Oden each had two hits. Cobb had a double. Luther and McFall both scored two runs.

Greenfield-Central (4-1, 2-0) continues HHC play at home Tuesday with a 6 p.m. contest against Delta (4-1, 1-1).

Marauders split with Fishers

Mt. Vernon’s baseball team, currently ranked No. 14 in Class 4A Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, split a Saturday doubleheader with No. 9 Fishers at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.

The Marauders lost Game 1, 5-4, and won Game 2, 5-3.

In the opener, a three-run third inning gave Mt. Vernon a 3-1 lead. Fishers tied it with two in the fourth and took the lead with a run in the fifth. Both teams scored one run in the seventh inning.

Josh James had a double and two RBI. Ryker Baer had two hits and stole three bases. Mason Meyer had a double and an RBI. Grant Payson added a hit and RBI. Hayden Ford had a double. Will Jacobs and Gage Blanchard also had hits. James, Payson, Ford and Blanchard scored runs.

Starter Jack Peine went four innings and struck out five. Reliever Tristan Sitton suffered the loss.

In Game 2, the Marauders rallied from a 3-0 deficit, scoring three in the fifth inning to tie it and two in the sixth to go ahead.

James had two of Mt. Vernon’s six hits. Baer, Blanchard and Meyer each had a hit and RBI. Jacobs had an RBI. Baer, Ford, Blanchard, James and Gavin Joy scored runs.

Andrew Boldt picked up the win in relief, retiring all four batters he faced. Starter Griffin Raquet struck out six and gave up five hits and three walks in 5.2 innings pitched.

Mt. Vernon (1-2) returns to action 6 p.m. Tuesday, opening Hoosier Heritage Conference play at Shelbyville.

New Pal beats Batesville

Scoring six runs in the game’s first two innings, New Palestine’s baseball team took control early in an eventual 7-3 non-conference win at home Saturday against Batesville.

Jackson Kamp and Adam Rickey had two hits apiece. Each had a double. Kamp drove in three and Rickey scored two runs.

Ben Hirschy had two sacrifice flies. Nic Deering scored twice and had an RBI.

Jace Jaques, Rigg Mahurin, Jacob Morris, Gavin Neal and Michael Thorpe each had singles. Trase Quillen scored twice and Jesse Isaacs added a run.

Deering and Mahurin each stole two bases.

Hirschy picked up the win in relief. He threw four innings, gave up two hits and one earned run and struck out five.

New Palestine (2-1, 1-1) returns to Hoosier Heritage Conference play Tuesday at Yorktown (2-2, 2-2).

Boys track and field

Mt. Vernon wins Warren Relays

Mt. Vernon’s boys track and field team won eight — and nearly nine —of 12 events to take home top honors at Saturday’s Warren Central Relays.

Mt. Vernon scored 100 points. Host Warren had 74 and Mooresville was third with 70, edging Southport (68) by two points.

Chris Edmonds, Marcus Mellentine, Charlie Cole and Sebastian Sprague won the 4×100-meter relay in 43.12 seconds.

Sprague, Wil Jones, Caden Cassada and Andres Langston were first in the 4×400 relay in 3-minutes, 26.49 seconds.

Austin Baugh, Cassada, Brady Webber and Aiden Keene won the 4×800 in 8:43.79.

The sprint medley (800 meters) team of Edmonds, Zaidyn Ramsey, Mellentine and Langston won in 1:33.80. The distance medley group of Cooper Hunziker, Cole, Isaiah Njau and Colin Strachman were victorious in 11:07.45.

Langston captured first place in the high jump by clearing 6-feet, 4-inches. Sawyer Ruminer won the pole vault at 13-feet.

The Marauders had a 1-2-3 finish in the long jump with Edmonds (22-feet, 4.5-inches), Sprague (21-feet, 6.5-inches) and Ramsey (21-feet, 2.5 inches).

Cassada just missed winning the 1600-meter run. He finished in 4:31.33, just .03 behind Mooresville’s Curt Dahncke.

Mt. Vernon is back in action Tuesday at Lawrence North.

Marauders go 2-for-2

Along with winning the Warren Central Relays Saturday, another group from the Mt. Vernon boys track and field team won the Patriot Invitational, hosted by Terre Haute North High School.

Mt. Vernon won with 163 points, more than doubling second-place Terre Haute North (80.5). Seeger finished third with 76. Clay City and Hebron tied for fourth with 52 points.

Xaiden Jenson was a double winner, taking the top spot in both the 800 (2-minutes, 8.16 seconds) and 1600 (4:43.18).

Malachi Washington won the 200-meter dash (23.87 seconds). Nate Hauser was first in the 400 dash (52.82 seconds).

The quartet of DJ Johnson, Robert Dodson, Joliba Brogan and Noah Virt won the 4×100-meter relay (45.62 seconds) and Washington, Sam Bowsher, Jake Hankley and Hauser won the 4×400 relay in 3:40.14.

Cooper win 1600

At Saturday’s Bishop Chatard Invitational, New Palestine’s Jake Cooper won the 1600-meter run.

Cooper’s time of 4:21.59 is second best in school history.

The school record was set in 1998 by Jake Draper (4:19.75).

Colton Spears won the high jump by clearing 5-feet, 8-inches.

The Dragons finished fourth in the team standings and scored 46 points. West Lafayette won with 114.

The team competes Tuesday at Southport with Rushville.

Girls track and field

Mt. Vernon wins Patriot Invitational

Mt. Vernon’s girls track and field team won the Patriot Invitational hosted by Terre Haute North High School Saturday.

The Marauders scored 178 points. Linton-Stockton was second with 87 and Terre Haute North followed with 81.

Molly Worth was part of four victories and Marissa Miner was part of three.

Worth led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.28 seconds. Londyn Floyd was second at 13.68 and Ani’ya Williams was third in 13.93. Worth won the 200 (27.17) and anchored both the 4×100 relay (51.74) and 4×400 relay (4:29.54).

Miner won the 300 hurdles in 49.65 seconds and led off both victorious relay teams.

Williams and Floyd were also part of the 4×100 team. Madelyn Wilson and Brooklyn Harris ran the middle legs of the 4×4.

Emma Gasiorek won the 800 (2:36.51) and Hannah Hauser won the 1600 (5:29.79).

Mt. Vernon hosts Southport Tuesday.

Journay is double winner

New Palestine sophomore Abby Journay won two events at Saturday’s Bishop Chatard Invitational.

Journay won the high jump and 200-meter dash.

In the 200, Journay ran a time of 26.16 seconds, fifth on the school’s all-time list.

The school record was set in 2019 by Jordan Reid (25.17 seconds).

Journay cleared 4-feet, 8-inches in the high jump.

New Palestine was fourth in the team standings with 62 points. Chatard won with 108.

The team competes Tuesday at Southport with Rushville.

Girls tennis

Mt. Vernon wins Trojan Classic

With a 4-1 victory against Terre Haute South and 3-2 triumph over host Center Grove, Mt. Vernon’s girls tennis team won the Trojan Invitational Saturday.

Against the Braves, Mt. Vernon swept the two doubles matches. At No. 1, Kylie Brandes and Ava Lusby won 6-0, 6-3. The No. 2 team of Addison Lockwood and Sophie Maxwell won 6-2, 6-1.

At singles, No. 2 Ginny Morelli was victorious by a score of 6-1, 6-4. No. 3 Maria Downs downed her opponent 6-1, 6-4.

No. 1 Caroline Allen lost a tight match 7-6, 6-4.

Matches were much closer against Center Grove.

Lockwood and Maxwell won 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 in the super tie-breaker. Allen lost in the tie-breaker 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.

Morelli won her match 6-4, 7-6. Brandes and Lusby won 6-2, 6-3, Downs was defeated 6-1, 6-0.

In the latest Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association (IHSTECA) poll released today, Mt. Vernon is ranked No. 12. Center Grove is No. 14.

Mt. Vernon (3-0) returns to action Wednesday, at home, against Centerville.

Dragons win opener

New Palestine’s girls tennis team opened its season Friday with a 3-2 victory at New Castle.

The No. 1 doubles team of Josephine Harvey and Emily Appleby won handily, 6-2, 6-0.

Singles players Kaitlyn Mitchell (No. 1) and Maizy Haynes (No. 3) secured the team win by winning a pair of hard-fought matches.

Mitchell won 6-4, 7-6(3). Haynes was victorious in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The Dragons play host to Triton Central Tuesday.

Boys golf

Mt. Vernon 10th, New Pal ties for 12th at invite

Mt. Vernon’s boys golf team placed 10th and New Palestine tied for 12th at the Yorktown Invitational at the Players Club Golf Course Saturday.

Mt. Vernon’s Nils Erkmanis shot a round of 6-over-par 78 and finished tied for 23rd. Marauder frosh Elijah Lemmon tied for 25th with a 79.

New Palestine was led by Luke Cofer and Joey McPike with 82 and 83, respectively.

Other scores for the Marauders included, Brady Pearson 84, Drew Lowder 90 and Jace Lugar 90.

For the Dragons, Nick Barada and Ty Mitchell each shot 88. Josiah Kissel had a 94.

Center Grove Red won with a round of 3-under-par 285.

Center Grove’s Nathan Springer shot a 5-under-par 67 to win the tournament.

Mt. Vernon returns to action Tuesday at Triton Central (Hawk’s Tail). New Palestine, along with Greenfield-Central, travel to Whiteland Tuesday.

Softball

Marauders split with Lutheran

Mt. Vernon’s softball team split a doubleheader at Indianapolis Lutheran Saturday.

The Marauders lost the opener 7-1 and won the second 8-3.

In Game 1, the Saints broke open a 2-1 game with a five-run fifth inning.

For the Marauders, Easton Wampler had three of the team’s six hits and an RBI. Lili Jenkins had two hits. Graci Hines had a hit and Shelby Rakosky scored a run.

In Game 2, Wampler led the way with two home runs and four RBI.

The Marauders had 10 hits. Mikayla Oger had three and Ainsley Baer and Wampler had two. Baer had a double and an RBI. Hines, Rakosky and Emery Wampler each had one hit.

Jenkins, Hines and Addy Riffle each had an RBI.

Baer scored three runs and stole two bases. Easton Wampler scored twice and Emery Wampler, Hines and Rakosky each scored one run.

Rakosky was the winning pitcher. She threw a complete game, striking out seven and giving up just three hits.

Mt. Vernon (1-3) returns to action Tuesday with the home and Hoosier Heritage Conference opener against Yorktown (1-0).
