Prep roundup: Cougars open HHC play with win

Greenfield-Central’s baseball team opened Hoosier Heritage Conference play at New Castle Friday with a 6-5 victory over the Trojans.

Freshman Jacob Welch had two RBI and scored two runs. Zander Cobb had a double and two RBI.

Landon Brooks picked up his third win of the season. He pitched 3.2 innings and struck out 10.

Brady Johnson had a pair of hits. Karson Gantt had a double and Kyle Oden drove in a run.

Relievers Kaden Snodgrass (two strikeouts) and Gavin Markus (three strikeouts) added to a 15-strikeout performance from the Cougars pitching staff.

The Cougars led 6-1 and had to hold off a Trojans’ rally. New Castle scored four times in the sixth inning.

Greenfield-Central (3-1, 1-0) looks to sweep the two-game HHC series at home this morning with a 10 a.m. contest against the Trojans at Molinder Field.

Dragons split with Golden Bears

With a 1-0 loss at Shelbyville Friday, the New Palestine baseball team split its two-game Hoosier Heritage Conference series with the Golden Bears.

New Palestine (1-1, 1-1) beat Shelbyville, at home, Tuesday. Friday’s game was a makeup date for the game originally scheduled for Wednesday.

Dragon pitchers Rigg Mahurin and Henry Thorpe combined on a three-hitter. Shelbyville’s lone run came in the second inning on a single, a hit-by-pitch, fielder’s choice and wild pitch.

Mahurin and Thorpe had five strikeouts each.

The Dragons also managed just three hits, getting one each from Jacob Morris, Adam Rickey and Nic Deering.

New Palestine hosts Batesville for a noon game today.

Girls tennis

Mt. Vernon opens with win

Mt. Vernon’s girls tennis team opened its season with a 5-0 victory at Whiteland Friday.

The Marauders swept singles play with wins from Caroline Allen (No. 1, 6-1, 6-1), Ginny Morelli (No. 2, 6-3, 6-0) and Maria Downs (No. 3, 6-1, 6-3).

Kylie Brandes and Ava Lusby won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-2. Addie Lockwood and Sophie Maxwell won at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-0.

Mt. Vernon takes on Terre Haute South at Center Grove today at 10 a.m.

Boys volleyball

New Pal wins in 5

New Palestine’s boys volleyball team won for the second straight time and improved to 4-3 on the season with a 3-2 victory at Lawrence North Thursday.

The Dragons won by set scores of 22-25, 25-15, 21-25, 26-24, 15-9.

Chase Emberton had 10 kills, 12 digs and was part of seven blocks. Jaxon Hinkle had 11 kills and 14 digs. Daysen Wood added 11 kills.

Setter Kameron Engle had 39 assists and four service aces. Libero Eli Martin had 30 digs.

Aaron Smith contributed four service aces and Matthew Everett added 11 digs.

On Wednesday, the Dragons picked up a 3-1 win, at home, over Noblesville.

They won by set scores of 12-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-18.

Emberton and Hinkle had 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Martin had 18 digs and Everett added 10. Engle had 27 assists.

New Palestine returns to action Tuesday at Martinsville.
